Genome Wide Association Study of Neuropathic Ocular Pain

open access: yesOphthalmology Science
Purpose: To conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of individuals with neuropathic ocular pain (NOP) symptoms to identify genomic variants that may predispose to NOP development. Design: Prospective study of individuals with NOP.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

A genome-wide association search for type 2 diabetes genes in African Americans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
African Americans are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes (T2DM) yet few studies have examined T2DM using genome-wide association approaches in this ethnicity.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

No Evidence for Genome-Wide Interactions on Plasma Fibrinogen by Smoking, Alcohol Consumption and Body Mass Index: Results from Meta-Analyses of 80,607 Subjects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Plasma fibrinogen is an acute phase protein playing an important role in the blood coagulation cascade having strong associations with smoking, alcohol consumption and body mass index (BMI).

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

A multi-stage genome-wide association study of bladder cancer identifies multiple susceptibility loci. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We conducted a multi-stage, genome-wide association study of bladder cancer with a primary scan of 591,637 SNPs in 3,532 affected individuals (cases) and 5,120 controls of European descent from five studies followed by a replication strategy, which ...

Genome wide in silico SNP-tumor association analysis

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2004
Background Carcinogenesis occurs, at least in part, due to the accumulation of mutations in critical genes that control the mechanisms of cell proliferation, differentiation and death.

Genome-Wide Association Study Implicates Immunogenetic Variation in Chemokine Signaling Pathways in Pediatric Tuberculosis Susceptibility

open access: yesJournal of Human Immunity
IntroductionAlthough immune responses to Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccination and susceptibility to mycobacterial infection vary across individuals, the underlying cellular mechanisms regulating this heterogeneity are poorly understood.

Simulating variance heterogeneity in quantitative genome wide association studies

open access: yesBMC Bioinformatics, 2018
Background Analyzing Variance heterogeneity in genome wide association studies (vGWAS) is an emerging approach for detecting genetic loci involved in gene-gene and gene-environment interactions.
