Invasion of the germinal centers

Cell, 2023
After vaccination or infection, long-lived germinal centers can produce antibodies with high affinity and specificity against pathogens. In this issue of Cell, de Carvalho et al. and Hägglöf et al. show that naive B cells can invade germinal centers, replacing B cells that entered early and changing features of antibody production.

The germinal center reaction

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2010
The germinal center (GC) reaction is the basis of T-dependent humoral immunity against foreign pathogens and the ultimate expression of the adaptive immune response. GCs represent a unique collaboration between proliferating antigen-specific B cells, T follicular helper cells, and the specialized follicular dendritic cells that constitutively occupy ...

Getting toGether in Germinal centers

Science Immunology, 2021
Ggt5 cleaves the ligand of P2RY8 in lymph node follicles and generates a gradient that supports B cell confinement to germinal centers.

Germinal centers develop oligoclonally

European Journal of Immunology, 1987
AbstractAs part of our studies into the role of germinal centers, we investigated whether each de novo generated germinal center (GC) develops from one single GC precursor cell (GCPC, monoclonal development), a few GCPC (oligoclonal development) or from many GCPC (polyclonal development).

The Germinal Center Response

Critical Reviews in Immunology, 2004
The germinal center reaction is the foundation of T-cell-dependent humoral responses. Antigen-specific B cells recruited into germinal centers undergo a complex cellular program that allows for extensive expansion, isotype switching, somatic hypermutation, and differentiation into antibody-forming cells and memory cells.

Germinal Center Survival

Science, 2010
The humoral immune response, which comprises antibodies secreted by B lymphocytes, is critical for protection against pathogens. In response to infection, B lymphocytes proliferate and differentiate into antibody-producing effector cells.

Immunosenescence and germinal center reaction

Immunological Reviews, 1997
Summary: Dysfunction of the immune system in aged individuals includes at least two important factors: accumulation of immunocytes with reduced function and accumulation of lymphocyte clones with self‐reactive potential. Coincidently, there is a profound reduction of the germinal center reaction in the aged.
