Mongolian gerbils were subjected to forebrain ischemia by bilateral carotid occlusion of 10 min at a) 30 degrees C and b) 37 degrees C followed by normothermic reperfusion ranging from 1 to 3 days (d).

It is expressed almost exclusively in astrocytes of the CNS but is also found in some cells of the PNS such as non-myelinating Schwann cells. GFAP is extensively used in histology and pathology as a cell-type marker.
