Preparation of fucosterol from giant kelp
Lipids, 1977AbstractCommercial extraction of alginic acid fromMacrocystis pyrifera leaves a residue that is a good source of fucosterol, 5,24(28)E‐stigmastadien‐3β‐ol. The isolation and purification of this sterol is described.

Contrasting effects of giant kelp on dynamics of surfperch populations
Oecologia, 1990The effect of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, on the population dynamics of two temperate reef fishes, striped surfperch (Embiotoca lateralis) and black surfperch (E. jacksoni), was examined. Based on an understanding of how particular reef resources influence abundances of the surfperch and of the effect of giant kelp on those resources, we ...

Mechanical adaptations of a giant kelp
Limnology and Oceanography, 1977Unusually high extensibility of the kelp Nereocystis luetkeana minimizes breakage by waves and tidal currents. Cellulose fibrils in cortical cell walls have a preferred angle of 60° to the stipe axis; this may be the structural basis of stipe extensibility.

Microsatellite markers for the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera
Conservation Genetics, 2009We report the isolation and characterization of 16 microsatellite loci to study the population genetics of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera. Markers were obtained by screening a genomic library enriched for microsatellite motifs. Of the 37 primer pairs defined, 16 amplified clean polymorphic microsatellites and are described.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS, GROWTH AND TRANSLOCATION IN GIANT KELP
American Journal of Botany, 1952this increased their susceptibility to fungal and bacterial attack. The conditions under which watersoaking was induced are likely also to have induced stomatal droplets. Johnson (1945) mentions that surface water was present on the leaves of some plants in his moist chambers.

Translocation in the Giant Kelp Macrocystis
Science, 1963Experiments with C 14 -labeled bicarbonate demonstrate that organic products of photosynthesis are transported through the stipe tissue of Macrocystis . Depending upon conditions, not all of which have been fully ascertained, the direction of transport may be either predominantly apical or ...
