Substrate specificity and the effect of calcium on Trypanosoma brucei metacaspase 2 [PDF]
Metacaspases play an important role in the life cycle of trypanosomes and their absence in humans makes them attractive drug targets. Here we use detailed kinetic, biochemical and structural analyses to investigate the substrate specificity and effects of Ca2+ on the activation of metacaspase 2 from Trypanosoma brucei.

The Role of Proteinase‐Activated Receptors 1 and 2 in the Regulation of Periodontal Tissue Metabolism and Disease [PDF]
Proteinase‐activated receptors 1 (PAR1) and 2 (PAR2) are the most highly expressed members of the PAR family in the periodontium. These receptors regulate periodontal inflammatory and repair processes through their activation by endogenous and bacterial enzymes.

The dysregulation of innate immunity by Porphyromonas gingivalis in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease. [PDF]
Abstract The etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains under active debate. In this perspective, we explore the hypothesis that a primarily infection‐caused chronic dysregulation and weakening of human innate immunity via the underexpression, degradation, and inactivation of innate immune proteins necessary for direct antimicrobial effects and ...

Insights Into the Mechanism of Action of Chlorhexidine on Porphyromonas gingivalis. [PDF]
Chlorhexidine (CHX) remains the most effective antiseptic in periodontal therapy, multiple reports have identified ultrastructural antibacterial effects of CHX on oral bacteria, however, little is known about its molecular mechanism of action on Porphyromonas gingivalis, an important pathobiont directly associated with the pathogenesis of periodontitis.

Contribution of proteases to the hallmarks of aging and to age‐related neurodegeneration
Proteases are a large family of proteolytic enzymes located in all cell compartments and in the extracellular space. Proteases impact all hallmarks of cellular and tissue aging, and the onset and progression of age‐related diseases including neurodegeneration.

Summary Organic matter degradation in marine environments is essential for the recycling of nutrients, especially under conditions of anoxia where organic matter tends to accumulate. However, little is known about the diversity of the microbial communities responsible for the mineralization of organic matter in the absence of oxygen, as well as the ...

Abstract Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogen of chronic periodontitis, is an asaccharolytic microorganism that solely utilizes nutritional amino acids as its energy source and cellular constituents. The bacterium is considered to incorporate proteinaceous nutrients mainly as dipeptides, thus exopeptidases that produce dipeptides from polypeptides are ...

Zebrafish as a new model to study effects of periodontal pathogens on cardiovascular diseases. [PDF]
Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is a keystone pathogen in the aetiology of chronic periodontitis. However, recent evidence suggests that the bacterium is also able to enter the bloodstream, interact with host cells and tissues, and ultimately contribute to
