Does Deposit Insurance Promote Deposit Stability? Evidence from the Postal Savings System during the 1920s

open access: yesJournal of Money, Credit and Banking, EarlyView.
Abstract We evaluate whether deposit insurance (DI) promotes liquidity by influencing depositor behavior. We use the postal savings (PS) system and state‐adopted DI schemes during the 1920s to examine the effect of bank suspensions on PS deposit growth in pairs of border cities (DI versus non‐DI).

Rural Capitalists and Development in Colonial Africa: A Comparative Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper explores the emergence and role of rural capitalists in colonial Sub‐Saharan Africa by comparing three peasant‐based economies: Bechuanaland, the Gold Coast and Tanganyika. Does Banking Diversity Matter for Credit Access? Evidence on SMES in Europe

open access: yesKyklos, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates SMEs' access to credit from the perspective of the biodiversity argument in banking, a conceptual framework that has been largely overlooked in the literature. Using bank‐ and firm‐level data for eight European countries from 2014 to 2022, I empirically assess the role of bank diversity—measured by the Gini‐Simpson ...

Seeing herbaria in a new light: leaf reflectance spectroscopy unlocks trait and classification modeling in plant biodiversity collections

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Reflectance spectroscopy is a rapid method for estimating traits and discriminating species. Spectral libraries from herbarium specimens represent an untapped resource for generating broad phenomic datasets across space, time, and taxa. We conducted a proof‐of‐concept study using trait data and spectra from herbarium specimens up to 179 yr old,

Why Has in‐Work Poverty Risen in Britain?

open access: yesOxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Is work a reliable route out of poverty, and what does that depend upon? In Britain, the headline relative poverty rate for those in working households steadily rose from 13.4% in 1994–95 to 18.4% in 2019–20. We study the drivers of this increase.
