Snow What? Strengths and Limitations of Different Snow Products in Western U.S. Mountains
Abstract Reported values of average annual peak snow water equivalent (SWE) in the mountains of the western United States differ by more than a factor of five, from not enough water to fill Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the region, to enough water to fill Lake Mead five times. These products are not created equal.

Variations in water storage in China over recent decades from GRACE observations and GLDAS [PDF]
Abstract. We applied Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) Tellus products in combination with Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) simulations and data from reports, to analyze variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in China as a whole and eight of its basins from 2003 to 2013.

Abstract Accurate estimation of terrestrial water storage (TWS) variations is important for understanding climate change and managing water resources. Satellite gravimetry has been a unique tool for this purpose, but has inherently low spatial resolution.

A Comparison of GLDAS Soil Moisture Anomalies against Standardized Precipitation Index and Multisatellite Estimations over South America [PDF]
This study aims to compare simulated soil moisture anomalies derived from different versions of the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), the standardized precipitation index (SPI), and a new multisatellite surface soil moisture product over ...

Karst spring discharge trend (the change in discharge over a period greater than 30 years for each spring) does not depend on discharge variability. Insets show two springs with contrasting discharge variability (variable vs. extremely high variability) but similar discharge trends.

ABSTRACT Amid the increasing frequency of extreme climate events globally, drought poses a serious threat to food security in Southwest China, where consecutive winter–spring droughts frequently affect maize growth. However, research on the specific processes and mechanisms underlying maize's response to prolonged seasonal drought remains relatively ...

Abstract Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), an important component of coastal water and nutrient budgets, is challenging to monitor and predict in the Arctic given the remoteness and harsh conditions. Here, we used explainable artificial intelligence to quantify the time‐varying importance of hydroclimatic and oceanic drivers of SGD at an Arctic ...
