Redshift Evolution of the Black Hole Merger Rate from Globular Clusters [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2018
As the sensitivity of current and future gravitational-wave detectors improves, it will become possible to measure the evolution of the binary black hole merger rate with redshift.

Data‐driven discovery of gene expression markers distinguishing pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia subtypes

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigates gene expression differences between two major pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) subtypes, B‐cell precursor ALL, and T‐cell ALL, using a data‐driven approach consisting of biostatistics and machine learning methods. Following analysis of a discovery dataset, we find a set of 14 expression markers differentiating the ...

PSR J1922+37: a 1.9 s Pulsar Discovered in the Direction of the Old Open Cluster NGC 6791

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
More than 300 pulsars have been discovered in Galactic globular clusters; however, none have been found in open clusters. Here we present results from a 20 hr survey of seven open clusters with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope ...

Extremely alpha-Enriched Globular Clusters in Early-Type Galaxies: A Step towards the Dawn of Stellar Populations? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We compare [alpha/Fe], metallicity, and age distributions of globular clusters in elliptical, lenticular, and spiral galaxies, which we derive from Lick line index measurements.

The Star Clusters That Make Black Hole Binaries across Cosmic Time [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2018
We explore the properties of dense star clusters that are likely to be nurseries of stellar black holes pairing in close binaries. We combine a cosmological model of globular cluster formation with analytic prescriptions for the dynamical assembly and ...

Unraveling LINE‐1 retrotransposition in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The novel RetroTest method allows the detection of L1 activation in clinical samples with low DNA input, providing global L1 activity and the identification of the L1 source element. We applied RetroTest to a real‐world cohort of HNSCC patients where we reported an early L1 activation, with more than 60% of T1 patients showing L1 activity.

Spectroscopic and Photometric Confirmation of 3 Globular and 14 Intermediate-age Clusters in the Irr II Galaxy NGC 3077

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
We present the results from spectroscopic and photometric analysis of 17 globular cluster (GC) candidates in the Irr II galaxy NGC 3077. The GC candidates were selected on the Hubble Space Telescope images and were cleaned of foreground Galatic stars ...

Formation histories of stars, clusters, and globular clusters in the E-MOSAICS simulations [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
The formation histories of globular clusters (GCs) are a key diagnostic for understanding their relation to the evolution of the Universe through cosmic time.

Tumor clusters with divergent inflammation and human retroelement expression determine the clinical outcome of patients with serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Analysis of treatment‐naïve high‐grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) and control tissues for ERVs, LINE‐1 (L1), inflammation, and immune checkpoints identified five clusters with diverse patient recurrence‐free survivals. An inflammation score was calculated and correlated with retroelement expression, where one novel cluster (Triple‐I) with high ...
