Boron-based refiners: Advantages in semi-solid-metal casting of Al-Si alloys

open access: yes, 2007
Inoculation has been studied in the semi-solid-metal (SSM) casting by sole boron addition. By boron addition, the structure is not only refined but also the sphericity of the primary α-Al particles increased.

Turning Unpredictable Biomolecule Adsorption to Controlled Corona Formation: Focus on Carbon Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling the protein corona formation onto carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) enhances their functionalities as platforms for cancer theranostics. Here, we reviewed the effects of the intrinsic and acquired properties of CNMs on protein corona formation, the consequent biological and toxicological outcomes, and the strategies to reshape corona formation ...

Anion-induced Folding of Staphylococcal Nuclease: Characterization of Multiple Equilibrium Partially Folded Intermediates

open access: yes, 1998
The refolding of acid-unfolded staphylococcal nuclease (SNase) induced by anions was characterized, and revealed the existence of three different partially folded intermediates (A states).

Additive Manufacturing of Ordered Polymer Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A new 3D printing strategy, Polymerization‐Induced Arrangement of Nanostructures with Order‐tunability (PIANO), enables the formation of ordered nanostructures in polymer materials by enhancing chain mobility during photopolymerization, overcoming the kinetic arrest that leads to disordered morphologies in the conventional Polymerization‐Induced ...

Self‐Seeded Nucleation of PET in a Benign Solvent Yields a High Modulus Aerogel With Ultra‐Low Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A new benign solvent (1,3‐diphenylacetone) enables a simple, safe, and sustainable dissolution and gelation method to convert waste PET into low density, monolithic aerogels with high mechanical strength (E = 20 MPa) and remarkably low thermal conductivity (k = 21.9 to 28.9 mW/m·K).

Binary globular clusters

open access: yesNew Astronomy, 2000
The dynamics of a close binary system of globular clusters is considered. It is shown that the star transfer process from one of the components to the other should lead to the decrease of dimension of the first cluster with simultaneous increase of the dimension of the second cluster.
