Glucocorticoid regulation of inflammation and its functional correlates: from HPA axis to glucocorticoid receptor dysfunction

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2012
Enhanced susceptibility to inflammatory and autoimmune disease can be related to impairments in HPA axis activity and associated hypocortisolism, or to glucocorticoid resistance resulting from impairments in local factors affecting glucocorticoid ...

Astaxanthin ameliorates benzalkonium chloride–induced dry eye disease through suppressing inflammation and oxidative stress via Keap1‐Nrf2/HO‐1 signaling pathways

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
The flowchart of this research. Abstract Background Dry eye disease (DED) predominantly results from elevated tear film osmolarity, which can not only cause ocular inconvenience but may lead to visual impairments, severely compromising patient well‐being and exerting substantial economic burdens as well.

Targeting B cells and plasma cells in autoimmune diseases: From established treatments to novel therapeutic approaches

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
B lineage cells have been identified as therapeutic targets in autoimmune diseases. In the current review article, we provide an overview of novel strategies to target B lineage cells in autoimmune diseases, with a focus on inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

Efficacy and Safety of Subcutaneous Abatacept Plus Standard Treatment for Active Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathy: Phase 3 Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous (SC) abatacept and standard of care (SOC) for the treatment of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) over 52 weeks. Methods In this randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled phase III trial, patients with treatment‐refractory IIM received SC abatacept (at 125 mg weekly)

The thioredoxin system: Balancing redox responses in immune cells and tumors

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
The thioredoxin (TRX) system is a critical contributor to cellular redox homeostasis in all living cells. Here, we review the key roles of TRX for activation, proliferation, and responses in T cells, B cells, and myeloid cells. Further, we conceptualize how this knowledge may be therapeutically exploited for cancer treatment.

Glucocorticoid-induced phosphorylation by CDK9 modulates the coactivator functions of transcriptional cofactor GRIP1 in macrophages

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Glucocorticoid reduces inflammation by both inducing anti-inflammatory genes and suppressing pro-inflammatory genes, but how these two functions are dictated is unclear.

Accuracy of direct gradient sensing by cell-surface receptors [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
Chemotactic cells of eukaryotic organisms are able to accurately sense shallow chemical concentration gradients using cell-surface receptors. This sensing ability is remarkable as cells must be able to spatially resolve small fractional differences in the numbers of particles randomly arriving at cell-surface receptors by diffusion.

Outcome of Patients With Lupus Nephritis Treated With an Anti‐CD40 Monoclonal Antibody According to Kidney Biopsy Features

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective A phase 2 trial tested different doses of the anti‐CD40 monoclonal antibody BI 655064 as an add‐on therapy to the standard of care in patients with class III or IV lupus nephritis (LN) with active disease. A post hoc analysis showed a potential benefit of the higher tested doses (180 and 240 mg) versus a low dose (120 mg) or placebo.

Pleural CD14+ monocytes/macrophages of healthy adolescents show a high expression of metallothionein family genes

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Modern surgical (technical) possibilities enable pleural macrophage isolation and analyses regardless the person`s age. Transcriptome profiling of macrophages from healthy or sick individuals revealed that these cells express high levels of metallothioneins, metal‐binding proteins that are involved in heavy metal detoxification, antioxidative defense ...

Molecular mechanisms of novel selective glucocorticoid receptor agonist action in breast cancer cells

open access: yesУспехи молекулярной онкологии
Introduction. Glucocorticoids (GC) are widely used in breast cancer (BC) therapy to reduce the side effects of cytostatic drugs and may exhibit antiproliferative effects on luminal BC cells.
