Winter‐active spiders (Clubiona) have a hyperactive antifreeze protein with a unique beta‐solenoid fold

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Antifreeze proteins from winter‐active spiders were purified using their affinity for ice. After LC–MSMS characterization, corresponding transcripts were identified. The antifreeze protein folds as a β‐solenoid with a large flat ice‐binding site on one surface and can bind to ice crystals and prevent their growth at −4 °C.

The Keystone‐Pathogen Hypothesis Updated: The Role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Porphyromonas gingivalis orchestrates a coordinated manipulation of immune and inflammatory responses in periodontal tissues which leads to the generation of a dysbiotic, subgingival biofilm community, and progression of periodontitis. The type 9 secretion system, lipid A modification, and the formation of outer membrane vesicles are important ...

Combination therapy for exacerbations of pain in osteoarthritis with non-fixed combinations

open access: yesТерапевтический архив
Aim. To evaluate the efficacy of a combination therapy containing chondroitin sulfate (CS), glucosamine (GL), methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), hyaluronic acid (HA), and native/hydrolyzed collagen compared to collagen-free therapy in the initial management of

An atlas of plant selenium metabolism

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Selenium (Se) is not only a rare and toxic element but also an essential micronutrient for humans and animals that is often in short supply. Terrestrial plants do not require Se, but it can have growth‐promoting or negative effects, depending on the exposure level.

Glucosamine-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress attenuates apolipoprotein B100 synthesis via PERK signaling

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2009
Glucosamine impairs hepatic apolipoprotein B100 (apoB100) production by inducing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and enhancing cotranslational and posttranslational apoB100 degradation (Qiu, W., R. K. Avramoglu, A. C. Rutledge, J. Tsai, and K.

Efficacy and Safety of Intra‐Articular Therapies for Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesOral Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to evaluate the most effective minimally invasive intra‐articular procedure for reducing pain and improving maximum mouth opening (MMO) in individuals diagnosed with painful articular TMD, specifically TMJ osteoarthritis and/or internal derangement.

Plastid Engineering for Photosynthesis‐Driven Synthesis of Hyaluronic Acid in Tobacco

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan composed of alternating units of N‐acetylglucosamine and glucuronic acid. High moisture retention, viscoelasticity and biocompatibility are unique features that make HA polymers attractive compounds for medical applications and aesthetic purposes.

Pinus‐derived membrane vesicles disrupt pathogenic metabolism in fungi

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Needle‐derived vesicles from pine trees impair fungal metabolism and growth, offering a sustainable strategy to control pine pitch canker disease. Abstract Much of what we know about the biological impacts of vesicles (MVs) is derived from Arabidopsis thaliana.

Crystal structure of a salt with a protonated sugar cation and a cobalt(II) complex anion: (GlcN–H, K)[Co(NCS)4]·2H2O

open access: yesIUCrData, 2019
The title compound, d-(+)-glucosammonium potassium tetrathiocyanatocobaltate(II) dihydrate, K(C6H14NO5)[Co(NCS)4]·2H2O or (GlcNH)(K)[Co(NCS)4]·2H2O, has been obtained as a side product of an incomplete salt metathesis reaction of d-(+)-glucosamine ...

Hyaluronic acid: A novel approach in regenerative/reconstructive periodontal therapy?

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Although hyaluronic acid (HA) has long been used for many medical applications, only in recent years has it gained greater popularity in the field of periodontics because of its biological effects during wound healing. Even today, most clinicians are not aware that more than one type of HA exists and that the extent of its ...
