In Vitro Consequences of Electronic-Cigarette Flavoring Exposure on the Immature Lung. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: The developing lung is uniquely susceptible and may be at increased risk of injury with exposure to e-cigarette constituents. We hypothesize that cellular toxicity and airway and vascular responses with exposure to flavored refill solutions ...

The Plasticizing Mechanism and Effect of Aluminium Chloride and Glycerin on Poly(vinyl alcohol) Films [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, 2016
Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) films were prepared with AlCl3·6H2O/glycerin and AlCl3·6H2O/poly glycerin as two kinds of complex plasticizer. The micromorphology of pure PVA film and PVA films plasticized with complex plasticizer was observed by Scanning ...

Effect of dietary glycerin supplementation in the starter diet on broiler performance

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2014
This study was conducted to evaluate the performance, carcass composition, and litter moisture of broiler chicks fed crude glycerin for 1-21 days. The study used 1056 male birds distributed in a completely randomized design, with six treatments (0, 3, 6,

Fluorescent visualization of a spreading surfactant

open access: yes, 2010
The spreading of surfactants on thin films is an industrially and medically important phenomenon, but the dynamics are highly nonlinear and visualization of the surfactant dynamics has been a long-standing experimental challenge.

Flow characteristics of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in a vessel stirred by a 60° pitched blade impeller [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Mean and rms velocity characteristics of two Newtonian flows at Reynolds numbers of 12,800 (glycerin solution) and 48,000 (water) and of a non-Newtonian flow (0.2% CMC solution, at a power number similar to the Newtonian glycerin flow) in a mixing vessel

Mathematical Model of \u3cem\u3eChlorella minutissima\u3c/em\u3e UTEX2341 Growth and Lipid Production Under Photoheterotrophic Fermentation Conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
To reduce the cost of algal biomass production, mathematical model was developed for the first time to describe microalgae growth, lipid production and glycerin consumption under photoheterotrophic conditions based on logistic, Luedeking–Piret and ...

Measurement of pressure and assessment of cavitation for a 22.5-kHz intra-arterial angioplasty device [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
This study was performed to understand better the mechanisms of action of an (22.5 kHz) ultrasonic wire catheter device used to remove atheromatous plaque in diseased blood vessels (ultrasonic angioplasty).

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Revisiting the 1954 Suspension Experiments of R. A.Bagnold [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In 1954 R. A. Bagnold published his seminal findings on the rheological properties of a liquid-solid suspension. Although this work has been cited extensively over the last fifty years, there has not been a critical review of the experiments.
