At‐RS31 orchestrates hierarchical cross‐regulation of splicing factors and integrates alternative splicing with TOR‐ABA pathways

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Alternative splicing is essential for plants, enabling a single gene to produce multiple transcript variants to boost functional diversity and fine‐tune responses to environmental and developmental cues. Arabidopsis thaliana At‐RS31, a plant‐specific splicing factor in the Serine/Arginine‐rich (SR) protein family, responds to light and the ...

Solanoeclepin C, a root‐secreted molecule converted by rhizosphere microbes to hatching factors for potato cyst nematodes

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Eclepins are root‐secreted compounds that induce the hatching of cyst nematodes. Solanoeclepin A (SEA) and B (SEB) have been isolated as potent hatching factors for potato cyst nematodes (PCNs). SEB is biosynthesized in roots, released into the rhizosphere, and converted into SEA by soil microorganisms.

Harnessing promoter elements to enhance gene editing in plants: perspectives and advances

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, Page 1375-1395, May 2025.
Summary Genome‐edited plants, endowed with climate‐smart traits, have been promoted as tools for strengthening resilience against climate change. Successful plant gene editing (GE) requires precise regulation of the GE machinery, a process controlled by the promoters, which drives its transcription through interactions with transcription factors (TFs ...

Modified carbon dot‐mediated transient transformation for genomic and epigenomic studies in wheat

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 4, Page 1139-1152, April 2025.
Summary Genotype restriction poses a significant bottleneck to stable transformation in the vast majority of plant species, thereby severely impeding advancement in plant bioengineering, particularly for crops. Nanoparticles (NPs) can serve as effective carriers for the transient delivery of nucleic acids, facilitating gene overexpression or silencing ...

Multi‐omics analysis identified the GmUGT88A1 gene, which coordinately regulates soybean resistance to cyst nematode and isoflavone content

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 4, Page 1291-1307, April 2025.
Summary Soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines) is a major pathogen harmful to soybean all over the world, causing huge yield loss every year. Soybean resistance to SCN is a complex quantitative trait controlled by a small number of major genes (rhg1 and Rhg4) and multiple micro‐effect genes.

Natural variation in the GmVPE1 promoter contributes to phosphorus re‐translocation to seeds and improves soybean yield

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 4, Page 1359-1372, April 2025.
Summary Phosphorus (P) is an essential yet frequently deficient plant nutrient. Optimizing P distribution and recycling between tissues is vital for improving P utilization efficiency (PUE). Yet, the mechanisms underlying the transport and re‐translocation of P within plants remain unclear.

A modulatory role of CG methylation on gene expression in soybean implicates its potential utility in breeding

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, Page 1585-1600, May 2025.
Summary Cytosine methylation (mCG) is an important heritable epigenetic modification, yet its functions remain to be fully defined in important crops. This study investigates mCG in soybean following the loss‐of‐function mutation of two GmMET1 genes.

Extracellular ATP: an emerging multifaceted regulator of plant fitness

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, Page 1771-1782, May 2025.
Summary Adenosine 5′‐triphosphate (ATP) is the energy currency of living organisms and the primary form of organic phosphate (Po) involved in cellular metabolism. In plants, some ATP is released into the extracellular matrix (ECM) in response to various stimuli, where it functions as extracellular ATP (eATP), a key signalling molecule.

Combined enhancement of ascorbic acid, β‐carotene and zeaxanthin in gene‐edited lettuce

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 6, Page 1954-1967, June 2025.
Summary Lettuce is widely grown and consumed but provides lower nutritional value compared to other leafy greens, particularly in the essential vitamins A and C. To address this, major control points in carotenoid and ascorbic acid (AsA) production were targeted using a viral‐based CRISPR/Cas9 system in the commercial lettuce cultivar ‘Noga’.

Plant genetic transformation: achievements, current status and future prospects

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 6, Page 2034-2058, June 2025.
Summary Regeneration represents a fundamental biological process wherein an organism's tissues or organs repair and replace themselves following damage or environmental stress. In plant systems, injured tree branches can regenerate adventitious buds and develop new crowns through propagation techniques like cuttings and canopy pruning, while transgenic
