STUDIES ON LIGNIN AND RELATED COMPOUNDS: XIII. THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF GLYCOL LIGNIN

Lignin was extracted from spruce wood meal with ethylene glycol containing (a) 0.05% and (b) 0.2% hydrogen chloride. On purification the two glycol lignins were found to contain 16.9% OCH3 and 62.8% C., and 16.5% OCH3 and 64.7% C. respectively. The aqueous glycol mother liquor was found to contain a soluble lignin-carbohydrate compound.

The extraction of "glycol lignin" by use of glycol containing 0.05% HCI has been investigated, new methods for the purification described, and the methoxyl contents shown to be 16.5 - 16% (and not 18.5, as previously reported). Fractionation gave two isomeric components.
