Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Endometriosis presenting as a rectal stricture in a patient with ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis: a case report

open access: yesFrontiers in Gastroenterology
Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) are at an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), which is compounded in the presence of other risk factors such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and stricture.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Hybrid gold single crystals incorporating amino acids

open access: yes, 2016
Composite hybrid gold crystals are of profound interest in various research areas ranging from materials science to biology. Their importance is due to their unique properties and potential implementation, for example in sensing or in bio-nanomedicine ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Spontaneous splenic rupture associated with Q fever and portal hypertension: A case report

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
Spontaneous splenic rupture (SSR) is an exceptionally rare and life-threatening condition, with its pathophysiology remaining poorly understood. This report describes the first documented case of SSR in a patient with Q fever infection and underlying ...

Employment Discrimination and the Assumption of Equality [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
The assumption of equality undergirds the American law of employment discrimination. The assumption is that racial and sexual classes are equally qualified for jobs.

Strengthening gold-gold bonds by complexing gold clusters with noble gases

open access: yes, 2015
We report an unexpectedly strong and complex chemical bonding of rare-gas atoms to neutral gold clusters. The bonding features are consistently reproduced at different levels of approximation within density-functional theory and beyond: from GGA, through
