Protein engineering strategies to optimise recombinant product synthesis and accumulation in Nicotiana benthamiana

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary In plant molecular farming, recombinant products include traditional protein targets, such as antibodies, antigens, and enzymes, but also increasingly refers to high‐value peptides, and small molecules produced by heterologous enzymatic pathways.

Red Alga Porphyridium Supports High‐Yield Production of a Functional Chimeric Hepatitis B Surface Antigen With Strong Cellular and Humoral Immunogenicity

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Microalgae represent promising production factories for the light‐driven, cost‐effective production of recombinant proteins. The red microalga Porphyridium purpureum displays particularly favourable transgene expression properties due to the episomal maintenance of transformation vectors at high copy numbers in the nucleus.

Single‐Cell Transcriptome Atlas and Dynamic Regulatory Mechanisms of Anther Development in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Anthers consist of various specialised cell types and play a significant role in plant reproduction. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying anther development and regulation have been extensively studied, the single‐cell transcriptional landscape and dynamic regulation during anther development in M. sativa remain largely unexplored.

PME10 Is a Pectin Methylesterase Driving PME Activity and Immunity Against Botrytis cinerea in Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.)

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Botrytis cinerea (Bc) is a major pathogen of cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.), with cell wall (CW) remodelling playing a critical role in fungal colonisation. CW‐modifying enzymes, particularly pectin methylesterases (PMEs), produced by both host and pathogen, influence CW integrity and the outcome of infection.

Glucuronoyl Esterase Expressed in Aspen Xylem Affects γ‐Ester Linkages Between Lignin and Glucuronoxylan Reducing Recalcitrance and Accelerating Growth

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Wood is the most abundant renewable natural resource composed of different polysaccharides and lignin, but its utilisation is hampered by intermolecular linkages between these components forming lignin‐carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) causing recalcitrance.
