Dispersive properties of gradient-dependent and rate-dependent media

open access: yesMechanics of Materials, 1994
The dispersive behaviour of waves propagating in gradient-dependent and rate-dependent media is investigated analytically and numerically. Attention is focused on the proper modelling of dynamic strain localisation and the crucial role that dispersion plays in this.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Laplacian-level density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy of low-dimensional nanostructures

open access: yes, 2010
In modeling low-dimensional electronic nanostructures, the evaluation of the electron-electron interaction is a challenging task. Here we present an accurate and practical density-functional approach to the two-dimensional many-electron problem.

Gradient bounds for a thin film epitaxy equation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We consider a gradient flow modeling the epitaxial growth of thin films with slope selection. The surface height profile satisfies a nonlinear diffusion equation with biharmonic dissipation. We establish optimal local and global wellposedness for initial

Semilinear Elliptic Systems with Dependence on the Gradient [PDF]

open access: yesMediterranean Journal of Mathematics, 2018
The authors prove existence and multiplicity results for radial solutions of semilinear elliptic systems with full gradient dependence that are subject to boundary values problems on an annulus. The approach relies on the fixed point index.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

On a Neumann Problem with an Intrinsic Operator

open access: yesAxioms
This paper investigates the existence and location of solutions for a Neumann problem driven by a (p,q) Laplacian operator and with a reaction term that depends not only on the solution and its gradient but also incorporates an intrinsic operator, which ...

Gradient estimates for nonlinear elliptic equations with a gradient-dependent nonlinearity [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Section A Mathematics, 2019
AbstractIn this paper, we obtain gradient estimates of the positive solutions to weightedp-Laplacian type equations with a gradient-dependent nonlinearity of the form0.1$${\rm div }( \vert x \vert ^\sigma \vert \nabla u \vert ^{p-2}\nabla u) = \vert x \vert ^{-\tau }u^q \vert \nabla u \vert ^m\quad {\rm in}\;\Omega^*: = \Omega {\rm \setminus }\{ 0\} .$$

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Analytical Solution of the O-X Mode Conversion Problem

open access: yes, 2010
The excitation of a slow extraordinary wave in a overdense plasma from an ordinary wave impinging on the critical layer in the plane spanned by the density gradient and magnetic field is solved analytically by formulating the problem in terms of a ...
