Penalty functions, used in computational mechanics, can provide an interpretation of the effects of the spatial gradients in continuum mechanics. In particular, the use of mass penalties and the use of microinertia terms in gradient elasticity lead to ...

A Note on Reduced Strain Gradient Elasticity [PDF]
We discuss the particular class of strain-gradient elastic material models which we called the reduced or degenerated strain-gradient elasticity. For this class the strain energy density depends on functions which have different differential properties in different spatial directions.

Large deformations of gradient elastic beams
Budiansky's nonlinear shell theory is particularized to a 2D setting, and thereupon generalized to a fully nonlinear, statically and kinematically exact, theory of strain-gradient elasticity of beams. The governing equations are displayed in their weak and strong forms.

Additive Gaussian Process Regression for Predictive Design of High‐Performance, Printable Silicones
A chemistry‐aware design framework for tuning printable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for vat photopolymerization (VPP) is developed using additive Gaussian process (GP) modeling. Polymer network mechanics informs variable groupings, feasible formulation constraints, and interaction variables.

Fractional Generalizations of Gradient Mechanics
This short chapter provides a fractional generalization of gradient mechanics, an approach (originally advanced by the author in the mid 80s) that has gained world-wide attention in the last decades due to its capability of modeling pattern forming ...

Oxide‐Free Titanium Coatings by Wire Arc Spraying in a Silane‐Doped Inert Atmosphere
A silane‐doped argon atmosphere enables the production of oxide‐free titanium coatings via twin‐wire arc spraying at ambient pressure. This innovative approach eliminates residual oxygen, creating process conditions that prevent oxidation and nitride formation.

Korn's second inequality and geometric rigidity with mixed growth conditions
Geometric rigidity states that a gradient field which is $L^p$-close to the set of proper rotations is necessarily $L^p$-close to a fixed rotation, and is one key estimate in nonlinear elasticity.

Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

On the strain gradient bending deformations
Bending deformations are reviewed in the context of strain gradient linear elasticity, considering the complete set of strain gradient components. It is well understood that conventional bending deformations depend on the collective uniaxial extension of
