On the granularity of summative kernels

open access: yes, 2008
International audienceIn this paper, we propose granularity as a new index to characterize the non-specificity of a summative kernel. This index is intended to reflect the behavior of a kernel in the usual signal processing applications.

Robust Spot Melting by 3D Spot Arrangements in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes an approach to replace separately melted contours for spot melting in electron beam powder fusion. Adapting the spot arrangements close to the contour combined with stacking yields a comparable surface quality without the inherent challenges of separate contours, as demonstrated, by electron optical images and roughness measurements.

Pinning Energy and Evidence of Granularity in the AC Susceptibility of an YBa2Cu3O7-x Superconducting Film

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The study of granularity in superconducting films by using AC susceptibility has a crucial role in the development of and improvement in the ReBCO-coated conductors, which are a constantly evolving reality in the modern power applications of ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Trans-Granular Multiple Instantiation and the Distinction of Instance Granularity and Type Granularity.

open access: yes, 2012
A) Left: Compositional partitions of a constitutively organized idealized multicellular organism into its constitutive object parts. Four partitions are shown: (i) into organs (f); (ii) into organ cells (e); (iii) into organelles (c,d) of organ cells ...

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

Granularity and Specificity in Fuzzy Function Approximation

open access: yes, 1998
This paper describes some preliminary investigations into the relationships between granularity and specificity in fuzzy rule bases. It proposes a strategy for learning fuzzy rules that optimizes granularity based on a desired degree of specificity.
