Determinants of flammability in savanna grass species

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, 2015
Tropical grasses fuel the majority of fires on Earth. In fire‐prone landscapes, enhanced flammability may be adaptive for grasses via the maintenance of an open canopy and an increase in spatiotemporal opportunities for recruitment and regeneration.

The sleeping giant needs coffee: Overlooked areas for integrating plant ecophysiology and evolutionary biology

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Interpretations of evolutionary outcomes are limited without incorporation of physiological ecology, and ecophysiological interpretations would benefit from incorporating evolutionary perspectives. Although there has been a rise of studies in the last 20 years between these fields, evolutionary studies that incorporate plant physiology have ...

Aspects of management options for pasture-based dairy production stocked at two cows per hectare [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
End of project reportWhite clover in association with Rhizobium bacteria have the capacity to fix or convent atmospheric N into plant available N. This can make a considerable contribution to sward productivity.

New Orthopteroid Records in Michigan Derived from Sampling a Small Field [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
(excerpt) A 1.8 acre sandy field in Isabella County, Michigan was sampled in 1971 and 1972 to obtain data on ecological and chronological distribution of orthopteroid species (Bland and Swayze 1973a,b).

Structural problems without structural solutions? Youth leaders' perceptions of their community

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract As young people explore and reflect on the conditions of their neighborhoods and communities, they can forge a critical consciousness—merging their perspectives and analysis to direct both individual and collective actions. Photovoice is a methodological tool that allows participants to document their perspectives and analysis and discuss with

Endophytic Epichloë species and their grass hosts: from evolution to applications

open access: yesPlant Molecular Biology, 2015
The closely linked fitness of the Epichloë symbiont and the host grass is presumed to align the coevolution of the species towards specialization and mutually beneficial cooperation. Ecological observations demonstrating that Epichloë-grass symbioses can

Neighborhood social environments and mental health among youth and adults in public housing

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Neighborhoods influence health in part through social processes. However, little is known about how multiple neighborhood social processes co‐occur, or about within (vs. between) neighborhood variation in social processes and health. This study asked how residents of a large public housing development describe their neighborhood and used ...

Population response of triploid grass carp to declining levels of hydrilla in the Santee Cooper Reservoirs, South Carolina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Approximately 768,500 triploid grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella Valenciennes) were stocked into the Santee Cooper reservoirs, South Carolina between 1989 and 1996 to control hydrilla ( Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle).
