Empirical prediction of organic matter digestibility in grasses, legumes and their mixtures from dairy farms in Atlantic Spain

open access: yesGrassland Science, EarlyView.
Abstract This study characterized the chemical composition and organic matter digestibility (OMD) of herbage from commercial dairy farms in Galicia (NW Spain), a humid‐temperate Atlantic region, and developed empirical prediction equations for OMD based on routine wet‐chemistry traits.

Population dynamics and reproductive success of Short‐eared Owls in relation to widely fluctuating food abundance and farmland habitat degradation

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Populations of the Short‐eared Owl Asio flammeus have declined across Europe and North America, probably in response to habitat degradation driven by agricultural intensification. However, long‐term evidence linking farmland habitat change to variation in breeding density and reproductive success remains limited.

Local habitat, not landscape diversity, drives richness and reproduction of cavity‐nesting bees and wasps in agricultural landscapes

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Local habitat type and hedgerow cover strongly shape bee and wasp richness, but only weakly their reproductive output, outweighing the landscape diversity effects at the 1‐km2 scale. Forests host more wasp but fewer bee species, whereas orchards support high richness of both; bee reproduction patterns are driven by one dominant species, while wasp ...

Elephant grass ensiled with wheat bran compared with corn silage in diets for lactating goats

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2014
The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of wheat bran as an additive in elephant-grass silage on intake and digestibility of the nutrients, ingestive behavior, and yield and chemical composition of milk.

Declining habitat directive butterflies within a major stronghold: Challenges for conservation Rückläufige Tagfalter der FFH‐Richtlinie in einer bedeutenden Hochburg: Herausforderungen für den Naturschutz

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Myrmecophilous Phengaris nausithous and P. teleius are highly specialized grassland butterflies and flagship species for European nature conservation, but they exhibit ongoing population declines. We show strong declines for both species in the Westerwald mountain range, western Germany, since 1994, driven by inappropriate timing of mowing, grassland ...

Study on fermentation characteristics of donkey roughage by cecal fermentation in vitro

open access: yesSiliao yanjiu, 2023
The experiment was to study the effect of different roughages on cecal fermentation parameters in vitro. A single factor completely randomized experimental design was used to compare in vitro cecal fermentation parameters of alfalfa, oat grass, whole ...

Genetic and Phenotypic Correlations Among Growth, Disease Occurrence, and Reproductive Performance From Calf to Heifer in Girolando Dairy Cattle

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Girolando breed, a cross between Holstein (Bos taurus) and Gir (Bos indicus), is the primary choice for dairy production in Brazilian tropical regions, as it combines high productive potential with adaptation to the tropical environment.

Carryover of Aflatoxin From Dairy Feed to Milk: A Systematic Review (1 January 2004–31 December 2024)

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aflatoxins, toxic metabolites produced by Aspergillus species, are frequently reported contaminants of dairy cattle feed worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where climatic conditions favor fungal growth, and they can be transferred into milk and dairy products.

Evaluating the In Vitro Digestibility of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens L.) Larvae as Potential Feed Ingredient in Dairy Cattle Silage‐Based Diets: A Focus on Proteins

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Dietary protein has a substantial economic impact on cattle feed, and it is also a critical component for animal growth and productivity. Several environmental issues related to soybeans have led to an increased interest in novel protein sources, such as insects.
