Automatic Kernel Selection for Gaussian Processes Regression with Approximate Bayesian Computation and Sequential Monte Carlo

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2017
The current work introduces a novel combination of two Bayesian tools, Gaussian Processes (GPs), and the use of the Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) algorithm for kernel selection and parameter estimation for machine learning applications.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Personality processes and intra-group dynamics in sports teams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Can a better understanding of group dynamics raise individual and team athletic performance or improve the outcomes of exercise interventions? Much human behaviour in sport and exercise settings is embedded within groups where individuals’ cognitions ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Proposal for demonstration of long-range cluster state entanglement in the presence of photon loss

open access: yesAPL Photonics, 2017
Photonic cluster states are a crucial resource for optical quantum computing. Recently a quantum dot single photon source has been demonstrated to produce strings of single photons in a small linear cluster state.

Interactions between the discoidin domain receptor 1 and β1 integrin regulate attachment to collagen

open access: yesBiology Open, 2013
Summary Collagen degradation by phagocytosis is essential for physiological collagen turnover and connective tissue homeostasis. The rate limiting step of phagocytosis is the binding of specific adhesion receptors, which include the integrins and ...

Structural basis for promiscuous action of monoterpenes on TRP channels

open access: yesCommunications Biology, 2021
Thi Hong Dung Nguyen et al. identify which regions within TRP channels TRPV1 and TRPV3 confer their sensitivity to monoterpenes that are major constituents of plant-derived essential oils.

Probing Methyl Group Dynamics in Proteins by NMR Cross-Correlated Dipolar Relaxation and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

open access: yes, 2022
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin relaxation is the most informative approach to experimentally probe the internal dynamics of proteins on the picosecond to nanosecond timescale.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A non-stationary bias adjustment method for improving the inter-annual variability and persistence of projected precipitation

open access: yesScientific Reports
Hydrological studies depend heavily on environmental variables, such as precipitation and resulting runoff, which exhibit highly seasonal and intermittent behaviour in semiarid basins.
