Metal Oxidation Kinetics and the Transition from Thin to Thick Films

open access: yes, 2018
We report an investigation of growth kinetics and transition from thin to thick films during metal oxidation. In the thin film limit (< 20 nm), Cabrera and Mott's theory is usually adopted by explicitly considering ionic drift through the oxide in ...

Magic Islands and Barriers to Attachment: A Si/Si(111)7x7 Growth Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Surface reconstructions can drastically modify growth kinetics during initial stages of epitaxial growth as well as during the process of surface equilibration after termination of growth.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Probing the dynamics of quasicrystal growth using synchrotron live imaging [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The dynamics of quasicrystal growth remains an unsolved problem in condensed matter. By means of synchrotron live imaging, facetted growth proceeding by the tangential motion of ledges at the solid-melt interface is clearly evidenced all along the ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Preparation of K2SO4 using convention method and in-situ observation of its crystal growth

open access: yes工程科学学报, 2016
The effects of the reaction molar ratio of ammonium sulfate and the content of sodium chloride on the purity and yield of potassium sulfate were investigated in this article. The growth rate of single crystal potassium sulfate was in-situ observed with a

Analysis of Spinodal Decomposition in Al-Zn and Al-Zn-Cu Alloys Using the Nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard Equation [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2017
The phase field model based on the nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard equation was applied to analyze the spinodal decomposition process in Al-Zn and Al-Zn-Cu alloys. Partial differential equations were solved using the explicit finite difference method for the Al-

Domain Growth Kinetics in a Cell-sized Liposome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We investigated the kinetics of domain growth on liposomes consisting of a ternary mixture (unsaturated phospholipid, saturated phospholipid, and cholesterol) by temperature jump.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
