Viscosity of guar gum and xanthan/guar gum mixture solutions

The viscosity of diluted guar gum solutions and the viscosity of xanthan and guar gum mixture solutions have been studied. Guar gum solutions showed pseudoplastic behaviour. Apparent viscosity increased with gum concentration and decreased with the temperature at which viscosity was measured.

Carbamoylethylation of guar gum

Carbamoylethylation of guar gum was carried out with acrylamide in presence of sodium hydroxide under different reaction conditions. Variables studied were concentration of sodium hydroxide, acrylamide, guar gum as well as reaction temperature and time. The nitrogen content, carboxyl content and total ether content were determined.

Fluoroacetic acid in guar gum

The toxicity of guar gum, derived from the Indian leguminous plant Cyamopsis tetragonolobus, is thought to be due to a globulin which can be denaturated and made non-toxic. Another very toxic compound, fluoroacetic acid, has been detected at a low level in raw samples of guar gum (0.07-1.42 micrograms fluoroacetic acid/g).

Study of the teratogenic potential of guar gum

Guar gum in the diet at 0, 1, 2, 4, 7.5 or 15% was available ad lib. to male and female Osborne-Mendel rats for 13 wk before mating, during mating and throughout gestation. During gestation, the females consumed 0, 0.7, 1.4, 2.7, 5.2 or 11.8 g guar gum/kg of body weight/day, respectively. The animals were killed on gestation day 20.

Abstract Male and female Osborne-Mendel rats, approximately 4 wk old, were fed guar gum for 91 days at levels of 0, 1·0, 2·0, 4·0, 7·5 or 15·0% in the diet. Preparation and characterization of guar gum nanoparticles

The preparation of guar gum nanoparticles by nanoprecipitation and cross-linking method is reported here. Nanoparticles act as potential carries for several classes of drugs and cosmetics. It has been found that the formation of nanoparticles depends upon the molecular mass of the galactomannan, solvent, surfactant, cross-linker and agitation.
