Transmission of Scrapie in Hamsters
Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1985Hamsters developed scrapie 100-160 days after eating either scrapie-infected hamsters or infected brain. The clinical signs and neuropathology of scrapie transmitted by cannibalism were identical to those observed after intracerebral or intraperitoneal inoculation of the agent.

Renal transplantation in hamsters
Microsurgery, 1981AbstractHamsters have never before been used for experimental kidney transplantation. An original anesthetic and microsurgical protocol is presented for renal transplantation in hamsters based on a series of 152 orthotopic renal transplantations. The operation is performed with the animal under general anesthesia of acepromazine and sodium thiopental ...

Prolylhydroxyproline Absorption in Hamsters
Canadian Journal of Biochemistry, 1972The intestinal transport of the dipeptide prolylhydroxyproline was investigated using hamsters and segments of hamster small intestines. The feeding of prolylhydroxyproline to hamsters resulted in the urinary excretion of 2% of the ingested dipeptide after 3 h or 7% after 24 h.

Plankton regularly travel vast distances up and down in the ocean. A water-filled hamster wheel with glass windows now enables detailed microscopic lab observations of individual aquatic microorganisms during their vertical migrations.

Opsonization of alphaviruses in hamsters
Journal of Medical Virology, 1983AbstractImmune elimination of alphaviruses in immunized hamsters appears to involve formation of virus/antibody aggregates which are subsequently cleared from the circulation by cells of the reticuloendothelial system (RES). Virulent strains of Venezuelan (VEE) and Western equine encephalitis (WEE) viruses which were cleared slowly from the circulation

Taste reactivity in the hamster
Physiology & Behavior, 1991Taste reactivity, which was first described in the rat, consists of ingestive and aversive response components, the latter seen mostly to bitter-tasting stimuli. The present experiment characterized the hamster's taste reactivity to an array of stimuli (sugars: 1 M sucrose, d-fructose and d-glucose; sodium salts: 1 M NaCl, Na2SO4 and NaNO3; acids: 30 ...

RU486 is not an antiprogestin in the hamster
Journal of Steroid Biochemistry, 1987The biological activity and progestin receptor binding activity of the synthetic steroid RU486 (RU38486; 17-beta-hydroxy-11-beta-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-17-alpha-(1-propynl++ +)- estra-4,9-diene-3-one) were investigated in the hamster. RU486 demonstrated no antiprogestational activity in the female hamster in that it was ineffective in blocking ...

Plasmalogenase in hamster heart
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1985In this study, the presence of plasmalogenase for the hydrolysis of the alk-1-enyl bond at the C-1 position of 1-alkenyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (ethanolamine plasmalogens) in the hamster heart was examined. A new spectrophotometric assay was developed for this study, in which the aldehyde released by the hydrolysis of the plamalogenase
