A Vibrothermal Haptic Display for Socio-emotional Communication

2021
Touch plays a vital role in maintaining human relationships through social and emotional communication. The proposed haptic display prototype generates stimuli in vibrotactile and thermal modalities toward simulating social touch cues between remote users.

HugMe: A haptic videoconferencing system for interpersonal communication

2008 IEEE Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems, 2008
Traditional teleconferencing multimedia systems are limited to audio and video information. Human touch, in the form of handshake, encouraging pat, comforting hug, among other physical contacts, is fundamental to physical and emotional development. This paper presents the motivation and design of a synchronous haptic teleconferencing system with touch ...

Flexible Electrostatic Transducers for Wearable Haptic Communication

2019 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC), 2019
We describe a wearable thin-film flexible electrostatic transducer (FET) design capable of delivering haptic stimulation directly to the skin over a broad frequency range. The FET vibrates a curved electrode on a thin film against the skin to generate perceivable displacement.

Evaluating ALPHAN: A Communication Protocol for Haptic Interaction

2008 Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems, 2008
In our previous work we introduced a novel application layer protocol, named ALPHAN, for haptic data communication. The protocol is characterized by three distinguished features: first, it is designed at the application layer to enable the application to define and control the networking parameters.

The Application of Social-Haptic Communication

Abstract Social-haptic communication is a method which can be applied with different types of acquired and congenitally deafblind people, and with different age groups: children, adults, and the elderly. Mutually agreed standard-form of touches that share meanings are identified as haptices.

Haptic Communication Tools for Collaborative Deformation of Molecules

2012
Several previous studies have investigated collaborative approaches for processing complex environments. Beyond the improvement of performance and working efficiency, these studies highlighted two important constraints, which limit the efficiency of these approaches.

Haptic Communication and Guide Dog

In this essay, experiences with using haptic signals to support the use of guide dogs for people with deafblindness are presented. Learning from these experiences is vital to improve communication between a person with deafblindness and their guide dog. The essay describes data and activities, main findings and considerations of necessary preconditions
