Phenotypic Shifts in Macrophages Within Advanced Atherosclerotic Plaques in Humans

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, EarlyView.
The transition from a non‐atherosclerotic to an atherosclerotic artery is associated with a shift in macrophage phenotypes. In the homeostatic environment of a non‐atherosclerotic artery, macrophages are predominantly anti‐inflammatory, anti‐atherogenic.

Free Foetal Haemoglobin in Severe Early‐Onset Foetal Growth Restriction: A Prospective Multi‐Centre Study

open access: yesBJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics &Gynaecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To assess foetal circulating free foetal haemoglobin (fHbF) levels and heme defences, correlated to foetal circulatory biometry and foetal sex in severe early‐onset foetal growth restriction (FGR). Design, Setting and Population A prospective study severe early‐onset foetal growth restriction pregnancies with close clinical ...

Undetectable haptoglobin is associated with major adverse kidney events in critically ill burn patients

open access: yesCritical Care, 2017
Background Intravascular haemolysis has been associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) in different clinical settings (cardiac surgery, sickle cell disease). Haemolysis occurs frequently in critically ill burn patients.

The Multifaceted Haptoglobin in the Context of Adipose Tissue and Metabolism.

open access: yesEndocrine reviews, 2016
Obesity is a low chronic inflammatory state because several inflammatory factors are increased in obese subjects, this having important implications for the onset of obesity-associated complications.

Iron overload in hereditary spherocytosis: Are genetic factors the cause?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Non‐transfusional iron overload (IOL) in hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is poorly documented compared with other red blood cell disorders. We studied 13 HS adults with confirmed IOL to identify potential genetic factors. Using a next‐generation sequencing panel of 46 genes related to HS, anaemia and iron metabolism, we found no association ...

Systemic lupus erythematosus‐associated autoantibodies in sickle cell disease: Spontaneous emergence in a patient and in transgenic sickle mice

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 206, Issue 4, Page 1213-1217, April 2025.
Summary We describe a patient with sickle cell disease (SCD) and elevated antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) who developed multi‐organ failure resembling catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome. Autoimmune screening revealed several autoantibodies characteristic of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Notably, routinely housed and unmanipulated transgenic

The Cryo-EM structure of human CD163 bound to haptoglobin-hemoglobin reveals molecular mechanisms of hemoglobin scavenging

open access: yesNature Communications
CD163, a macrophage-specific receptor, plays a critical role in scavenging hemoglobin released during hemolysis, protecting against oxidative effects of heme iron.

Diagnostic Role of Serum Haptoglobin level in Early Onset Neonatal Sepsis [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Neonatology, 2016
Background: Introduction: Searching for an ideal marker for diagnosing neonatal infection is still an important concern in every country. There are many biomarkers reported for neonatal sepsis.

Fucosylation Is a Promising Target for Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2012
Oligosaccharides, sequences of carbohydrates conjugated to proteins and lipids, are arguably the most abundant and structurally diverse class of molecules.

Insights on N-glycosylation of human haptoglobin and its association with cancers.

open access: yesGlycobiology, 2016
Protein glycosylation is one of the most significant post-translation modifications and plays a critical role in various biological functions. Haptoglobin (Hp) is one of the acute-phase response proteins secreted by liver.
