Recent Development of Heavy-Ion Radiotherapy Technology with HIMAC
Since 1994, Heavy-Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba, HIMAC, has treated patients of more than 9,000 with the carbon-ion radiotherapy. Recently, NIRS has been engaged in a “new treatment research project” toward the further development of the HIMAC treatment.

Advancement of microdosimetric kinetic model in heavy-ion radiotherapy
To date, more than 11,000 cancer patients have been treated with therapeutic carbon-ion beams at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). In the treatment planning system, the biological effectiveness of the therapeutic carbon-ion beams has been predicted based on the microdosimetric kinetic (MK) model.
