Antbears and underground melons: A highly specialized seed dispersal mutualism mediated by scent

Seed dispersal is critical for the establishment and persistence of populations of most plant species. We investigated the seed dispersal biology of an African melon, Cucumis humifructus, which is closely related to cultivated cucumbers and watermelons but differs in that it buries its fruits deep underground.

Apple, one of the world's most widely cultivated and economically important fruit crops, has two wild relatives native to Canada. In this review, we describe the importance of these native apple species to Indigenous heritage and the current threats the species faces due to pests, diseases, and habitat loss.

Magnetic Hopfions as Local Rotations of the Uniform Magnetization Background

The Hopf mapping of 3D coordinate space to the unit sphere m2 = 1 in the magnetization space m(r) can be parametrized by some angles. These angles are used to define a local rotation matrix to restore the hopfion magnetization configuration from the uniformly magnetized state for any Hopf indices.
