Helical milling of CFRP–titanium layer compounds

CIRP Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology, 2008
Helical milling is used to generate boreholes by means of a milling tool being operated on a helical path into the workpiece. The bore diameter can be adjusted through the diameter of the helical path. In comparison to conventional drilling operations this process often results in lower burr formation and fiber delamination.

Prediction of cutting forces in helical milling process

International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2011
The prediction of cutting forces is important for the planning and optimization of machining process in order to reduce machining damage. Helical milling is a kind of hole-machining technique with a milling tool feeding on a helical path into the workpiece, and thus, both the periphery cutting edges and the bottom cutting edges all participated in the ...

Bulgur milling using a helical disc mill

Journal of Food Engineering, 2008
Abstract In the present study, a helical disc mill was used to mill bulgur. Screen analysis (%), colour (lightness, redness, yellowness and yellowness index), yield, loss, energy consumption, capacity, hectolitre-weight (bulk density), ash, and moisture contents of bulgur were followed at the different disc gaps (1.9, 1.6, 1.3, 1.2, 1.0, 0.8, 0.6, 0 ...

Power and Forces in Milling S.A.E. 3150 Steel With Helical Mills

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1937
Abstract This paper outlines a series of tests conducted on a milling machine using slab mills of similar construction except for variation in rake angle, when milling an S.A.E. 3150 steel. The cutters had rake angles of 20, 15, 10, and 5 deg as variables, but otherwise were 3 in. in diameter, and had 12 teeth on a 25-deg left-hand helix.

Study on micro helical milling of small holes with flat end mills

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2018
Helical milling as an eco-friendly hole-making process has various advantages comparing to conventional drilling process and has been widely studied. But micro helical milling for small holes was not investigated. This paper focuses on preliminary studies on micro helical milling of small holes with flat micro end mills.

A Comparative Study of Helical Polygonal Turning and Helical Peripheral Milling in a Turn Mill

Volume 2: Manufacturing Equipment and Automation; Manufacturing Processes; Manufacturing Systems; Nano/Micro/Meso Manufacturing; Quality & Reliability
Abstract Traditionally, the milling process is adopted to machine polygonal geometries from a cylindrical bar on a Sliding Head Turn-Mill Center. In the case of titanium implants, machining helical geometries with polygonal cross sections is time-consuming. However, to meet increasing demand, faster cycle times become a crucial parameter

Prediction of heat transfer process in helical milling

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2014
This paper represented a three-dimensional heat transfer model which describes the temperature distribution with the time variation in solid with conduction-convection boundary during the helical milling process. On the basis of the kinematic mechanisms of helical milling, two types of heat sources were presented; one was the first heat source (FTHS ...
