A Novel Molecular Recognition Motif Necessary for Targeting Photoactivated Phytochrome Signaling to Specific Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Transcription Factors[W] [PDF]

open access: yesThe Plant Cell, 2004
AbstractThe phytochrome (phy) family of sensory photoreceptors (phyA to phyE) in Arabidopsis thaliana control plant developmental transitions in response to informational light signals throughout the life cycle. The photoactivated conformer of the photoreceptor Pfr has been shown to translocate into the nucleus where it induces changes in gene ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The Helix-Loop-Helix Motif at the N Terminus of HalI Is Essential for Its Immunity Function against Halocin C8 [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 2008
ABSTRACT Halocin C8 (HalC8) is a stable microhalocin exhibiting strong antimicrobial activity against a wide range of haloarchaea. HalI, a 207-amino-acid peptide derived from the N terminus of the HalC8 preproprotein, is the immunity protein of HalC8.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

A novel Snail-related transcription factor Smuc regulates basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor activities via specific E-box motifs [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2000
Snail family proteins are zinc finger transcriptional regulators first identified in Drosophila which play critical roles in cell fate determination. We identified a novel Snail -related gene from murine skeletalmusclecells designated Smuc. Northern blot analysis showed that Smuc was highly expressed in skeletal muscle and thymus.

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Expression from the murine p53 promoter is mediated by factor binding to a downstream helix-loop-helix recognition motif. [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1991
Expression of the p53 gene plays an important role in the regulation of cellular proliferation and malignant transformation. Overexpression of mutant forms of p53 is in fact a common feature of many transformed cells. Studies dealing with the transcriptional regulatory regions of the p53 gene indicate that, unlike most promoters transcribed by RNA ...

Selective and Precise Editing of Digital Polymers Through Parallel or Series Toehold‐Mediated Strand Displacement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A sequence‐encoded supramolecular construct containing two accessible toeholds is developed herein for enabling multiple editing operations. By introducing specific input strands, it is possible to selectively erase or rewrite digital content through parallel or series toehold‐mediated strand displacement (PTMSD or STMSD).

Comparative analysis of TTF‐1 binding DNA regions in small‐cell lung cancer and non‐small‐cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, 2020
Thyroid transcription factor‐1 (TTF‐1, encoded by the NKX2‐1 gene) is highly expressed in small‐cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and lung adenocarcinoma (LADC), but how its functional roles differ between SCLC and LADC remains to be elucidated.

The TFIIIB-assembling subunit of yeast transcription factor TFIIIC has both tetratricopeptide repeats and basic helix-loop-helix motifs. [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1993
The multisubunit yeast transcription factor IIIC (TFIIIC; also called tau) can undergo considerable conformational changes upon binding to the A and B blocks of tRNA genes. After binding to DNA encoding tRNA (tDNA), TFIIIC acts as an assembly factor to recruit an initiation factor, TFIIIB, via its tau 131 subunit.
