Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Solitude and fear during the great coronavirus war

open access: yesPatient Experience Journal, 2020
When you get ill, the first thing that comes to your mind is, “Will I make it? Will I survive?". COVID19 has a major impact on mental health. A sadness that inundates us like a river in flood and which we cannot hold back.

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

Emotionality, Conditioned Helplessness, and Escape Conditioning [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
The role of emotionality in mediating conditioned helplessness was tested by comparing the performance of 16 handled (low emotionality) and 16 nonhandled (high emotionality) litters of rats, half of each group having had prior experience with ...

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Trauma e Infância : Considerações sobre a Vivência de Situações Potencialmente Traumáticas

open access: yesPsicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa
RESUMOA partir da teoria freudiana, o artigo propõe uma discussão em torno do lugar ocupado pelo acontecimento na constituição do trauma. O principal ponto de interesse consiste em pensar as conseqüências da vivência, ainda na infância, de acontecimentos

Factors Associated with Helplessness among Japanese Collegiate Swimmers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In this study the factors that lead to learned helplessness among Japanese collegiate swimmers were examined. Participants were 135 men and 72 women swimmers (ages 18 to 22 years). A Sports Attributional Style Scale measuring helplessness in performance

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an
