EXPERIMENTAL INFECTION IN NORTH AMERICAN ELK WITH EPIZOOTIC HEMORRHAGIC DISEASE VIRUS

Two elk (Cervus canadensis) were inoculated intravenously with epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus. No overt signs of disease were observed in the elk although one animal had a slight febrile response. A cell associated viremia was detected in both elk, which persisted in one animal for 30 days post-inoculation.

SUMMARY Plaque assay and plaque neutralization of bluetongue virus and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus were studied in baby hamster kidney (bhk21) cells grown under an overlay containing gum tragacanth. Tests were done in plastic panels, each with 24 wells, and variables were established for achieving reproducible results.

Two strains of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), New Jersey (NJ) and Kentucky (KY), of deer were biologically transmitted between white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, by Culicoides variipennis. The KY strain, isolated from C. variipennis collected during an epizootic in deer, was identified as EHDV by serological tests.
