From Bat to Worse: The Pivotal Role of Bats for Viral Zoonosis

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 18, Issue 7, July 2025.
Thanks to a dampened inflammatory innate immune response, various Chiropteran (bat) species frequently carry ‐ without showing symptoms – diverse viruses that can cause severe diseases in humans. The reasons why bats are a pivotal virus reservoir for emerging viral diseases are discussed in this Lilliput contribution.

First identification and phylogenetic analysis of equine hepacivirus in Korea

open access: yesInfection, Genetics and Evolution, 2017
Non-primate hepacivirus (NPHV) corresponds a group of isolates recently characterized in horses and dogs that present similar genomic organization and are closely related to hepatitis C virus. Since canine hapacivirus, NPHV identified in dogs, was first discovered in dogs in the United States, equine hepacivirus (EqHV, NPHV identified in horses) has ...

Characterization of nonprimate hepacivirus and construction of a functional molecular clone [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2015
Significance The origin of hepatitis C virus (HCV) has long remained a mystery. Unexpectedly, a plethora of HCV-related hepaciviruses was recently discovered in horses, monkeys, rodents, and bats. These discoveries are of particular interest and may aid in understanding HCV evolution, molecular biology, and natural history.

Final Report of Unmet Needs of Interferon-Based Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis C in Korea: Basis for Moving into the Direct-Acting Antiviral Era

open access: yesGut and Liver, 2017
Background/AimsTo evaluate the era of direct acting antivirals (DAAs), we must understand the treatment patterns and outcomes of interferon-based therapy for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

Il Trattamento Della Recidiva di Epatite C dopo Trapianto di Fegato con Sofosbuvir e Ribavirina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016

A comprehensive overview on the crosstalk between microRNAs and viral pathogenesis and infection

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, Volume 45, Issue 2, Page 349-425, March 2025.
Abstract Infections caused by viruses as the smallest infectious agents, pose a major threat to global public health. Viral infections utilize different host mechanisms to facilitate their own propagation and pathogenesis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), as small noncoding RNA molecules, play important regulatory roles in different diseases, including viral ...

Sequencing of the Hepatitis C Virus: A Systematic Review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Since the identification of hepatitis C virus (HCV), viral sequencing has been important in understanding HCV classification, epidemiology, evolution, transmission clustering, treatment response and natural history.

Hepatitis C Virus Saint Petersburg Variant Detection With Machine Learning Methods

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 2, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Hepatitis C virus infection is a significant global health concern, affecting millions worldwide. Although direct‐acting antivirals achieve over 90% success rate, treatment failures still occur, particularly when pan‐genotypic DAAs are unavailable, and drugs need to be chosen based on the present HCV genotype.

Seroepidemiology of non-primate hepacivirus (NPHV) in Japanese native horses

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Medical Science, 2018
Non-primate hepacivirus (NPHV) is recently identified as a closely related homologue of hepatitis C virus. The previous studies showed a high prevalence of NPHV infection among Japanese domestic horses originated from abroad. The historical distribution of NPHV among horses in Japan, therefore, is still unknown. In this study, seroepidemiological study

Comprehensive Enteroviral Serology Links Infection and Anti‐Melanoma Differentiation‐Associated Protein 5 Dermatomyositis

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2025.
Objective Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are a group of heterogeneous, systemic autoimmune diseases characterized by specific clinical features and, frequently, skeletal muscle inflammation. Specific subtypes of IIMs can be characterized by myositis‐specific autoantibodies and are associated with distinct clinical phenotypes.
