Glycosaminoglycans as Polyelectrolytes: Charge, Interactions, and Applications

open access: yesChemBioChem, EarlyView.
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are linear, anionic biopolymers with their functions tightly linked to their charge. This review approaches GAGs from a polyelectrolyte perspective, shedding light on how the distribution of sulfate groups and, thus, negative charges, governs their interactions with other biomolecules.

Regulation of stem cell fate by HSPGs: implication in hair follicle cycling

open access: yesnpj Regenerative Medicine, 2022
Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are part of proteoglycan family. They are composed of heparan sulfate (HS)-type glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains covalently linked to a core protein.

Establishment, Characterization, and Cryopreservation of Feather Follicle Fibroblast Lines From Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)

open access: yesCell Biology International, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cryopreservation, biobanking, and in vitro propagation of cells from endangered species represent key strategies for advancing biodiversity conservation. The Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), a flagship avian species of the Brazilian Pantanal, is among the critically vulnerable taxa that stand to benefit significantly from such ...

Ontogeny of RSPO1, FOXL2, and RUNX1 during ovarian differentiation in the marsupial tammar wallaby

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background RSPO1 and FOXL2 are female sex‐determining genes involved in the differentiation and organization of the ovary in some eutherian mammals. Mutations or loss of function of these genes are associated with partial to full sex reversal in mice, humans, and goats.

Glycosaminoglycan linkage region of urinary bikunin as a potentially useful biomarker for β3GalT6‐deficient spondylodysplastic Ehlers–Danlos syndrome

open access: yesJIMD Reports, 2022
The spondylodysplastic type of Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (spEDS) is caused by genetic defects in the B4GALT7 or B3GALT6 genes both deranging the biosynthesis of the glycosaminoglycan linkage region of chondroitin/dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate ...

Protein glycosylation in lung cancer from a mass spectrometry perspective

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, EarlyView.
Abstract Lung cancer is a severe disease for which better diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. Increasing evidence implies that aberrant protein glycosylation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis and progression of lung cancer.

Breast Milk Proteome: Changes in the Different Stages of Lactation and Impacts of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Body Mass Index

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, EarlyView.
We analyzed colostrum and breast milk from 47 mothers to see how proteins change over time and with maternal health. Colostrum had more immune proteins, while mature milk had proteins linked to growth support. Gestational diabetes and higher BMI altered the protein composition.

Role of Heparan Sulfate 2-O-Sulfotransferase in Prostate Cancer Cell Proliferation, Invasion, and Growth Factor Signaling

open access: yesProstate Cancer, 2011
Heparan-sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are required for maximal growth factor signaling in prostate cancer progression. The degree of sulfate modification on the covalently attached heparan sulfate (HS) chains is one of the determining factors of growth ...

Efficient analysis of toxicity and mechanisms of isoflurane on postoperative delirium by network toxicology and molecular docking

open access: yesNeuroprotection, EarlyView.
Abstract Postoperative delirium (POD), a prevalent neurological complication in older surgical patients, adversely affects recovery. Isoflurane, a common inhalational anesthetic, exhibits neurotoxic potential, but its role in POD pathogenesis remains unclear.
