The herpesviruses form a large group with many common properties. Many animal species have one or more distinct herpesviruses. Strong evidence is available that at least two nonhuman herpesviruses are able to induce malignancy in nonhuman vertebrates, and weak but suggestive evidence exists for four others.

Veterinary Microbiology, 1999
This review focuses on felid herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1), the most studied of the carnivore herpesviruses. Canid herpesvirus (CHV-1) and phocid (seal) herpesvirus 1 (PhHV-1) are also included where information is available. FHV-1 is a member of the Varicellovirus genus of the Alphaherpesvirinae, which appears to be closely related phylogenetically to both ...

Equine Herpesviruses 2 and 5 Are γ-Herpesviruses
Virology, 1993Equine herpesviruses 2 and 5 (EHV-2 and EHV-5) have biological properties and genome structures that support their classification as members of the Betaherpesvirinae. In order to investigate whether this is supported by genetic data, we analysed the sequences of random DNA fragments and identified 25 EHV-2 and 28 EHV-5 genes that encode amino acid ...

Vaccination against herpesviruses
Pediatrics, 1975The elimination of infectious diseases in the United States during this century has been a truly remarkable achievement. Mortality from diphtheria, smallpox, pertussis, poliomyelitis, and tetanus have been reduced dramatically. Consequently, attention turned to the conquest of diseases such as measles, rubella, and even mumps.

Herpesviruses represent a ubiquitous class of DNA viruses, of which many individual members have been implicated in the development of specific neoplasms. In fact, of the five known human herpesviruses, four are associated to varying degrees with human cancers.
