Heterogeneous nucleation or homogeneous nucleation?

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2000
The generic heterogeneous effect of foreign particles on three dimensional nucleation was examined both theoretically and experimentally. It shows that the nucleation observed under normal conditions includes a sequence of progressive heterogeneous processes, characterized by different interfacial correlation function f(m,x)s.

Heterogeneous nucleation of diamond

Czechoslovak Journal of Physics, 1997
We present theoretical study of the formation of diamond clusters on the non-diamond substrate. This phenomenon is modelled at the kinetic level and described by the Fokker-Planck-like equation governing the evolution of the distribution of newly-forming clusters. Incubation time of this process is calculated and compared with the experimental data.

The molecular approach to heterogeneous nucleation

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2005
A molecular approach to heterogeneous nucleation has been developed. The expressions for the equilibrium cluster distribution, the reversible work of the cluster formation, and the nucleation rate have been derived. Two separate statements for the work of formation were formulated.

Heterogeneous nucleation and adsorption

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2003
This paper discusses the heterogeneous nucleation of solidification, treating the fundamental process as taking place by adsorption on the surface of the heterogeneous nucleant. A theoretical framework for adsorption and nucleation catalysis is described, and some related experimental results are discussed.

Generalized Gibbs’ approach in heterogeneous nucleation

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2013
Heterogeneous nucleation (condensation and boiling) on planar solid surfaces is described taking into account changes of the state parameters of the critical clusters in dependence on supersaturation. The account of the variation of the state parameters of the cluster phase on nucleation is performed in the framework of the generalized Gibbs’ approach.

Heterogeneous Nucleation of Nitrogen

2007
Homogeneous and heterogeneous vapor–liquid nucleation experiments of nitrogen are carried out using a cryogenic nucleation pulse chamber. For the latter water ice crystals are used as heterogeneous seeds. The onset of nucleation is detected by constant angle Mie scattering at pressures from 2 to 25 kPa and temperatures from 50 to 70 K.

Numerical Investigation of Nucleating-Agent-Enhanced Heterogeneous Nucleation

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2010
Nucleating agents have long been employed in polymeric foaming processes to promote cell nucleation, increase cell density, and improve cell uniformity. This improvement in foam morphology is usually considered to result from the enhanced heterogeneous nucleation caused by the lower free energy barrier for cell nucleation.

Soluble-Insoluble Transition in Binary Heterogeneous Nucleation

Physical Review Letters, 2001
In this Letter, we report the first experimental study of binary heterogeneous gas-liquid nucleation. Onset activities were obtained for nucleation of various n-propanol-water vapor mixtures on 6.9 nm NaCl particles soluble in water and practically insoluble in n-propanol.

Kinetics of Heterogeneous Nucleation

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1950
Consider a phase transition α⇄β. Stable β-embryos can be retained in the temperature range of α-stability in cavities of suitable extraneous solids present in the system. Retained β-embryos may nucleate the α→β-transformation in the range of β-stability. Using these concepts a theory for the effect of thermal history upon the kinetics of

Heterogeneous nucleation in photosensitive glasses

Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 1997
Abstract Time-temperature dependencies of the nucleation rates for lithium disilicate glasses containing impurities of Au, Ag and Pt were investigated. The absolute values of nucleation rate for lithium disilicate were determined, as were values of activation enthalpy of structural unit transitions from glass to crystal and those of glass viscous ...
