On the formation of reductic acid from pentoses or hexuronic acids

Carbohydrate Research, 1993
Abstract Careful hydrolysis of (±)- cis - or (±)- trans -tetrahydro-2,5-dimethoxy-2-furaldehyde dimethyl acetal proceeded via 5,5-dimethoxy-4-oxopentanal to give (±)- trans -4-hydroxy-5-methoxy-2-cyclopentenone and (±)- trans -4,5-dihydroxy-2-cyclopentenone.

Improved analytical method for the hexuronic acids at the reducing terminals of glycosaminoglycans.

Journal of Biochemical and Biophysical Methods, 1984
When endo-uronidases act on glycosaminoglycans, the reaction products have hexuronic acid residues at the reducing terminals. An analytical method for hexuronic acids at the reducing terminals was devised for hyaluronate oligosaccharides having hexuronic acid residues at the reducing terminals.

Determination of hexuronic acids in glycosaminoglycans by automated ion-exchange chromatography.

Analytical Biochemistry, 1976
Abstract This report describes a procedure for analyzing glucuronic and iduronic acids using the Technicon automated sugar chromatography system. Glueronic and iduronic acids of standard samples of glycosaminoglycans have been analyzed after hydrolysis by formic acid.

Vitamin C and Hexuronic Acid

Nature, 1932
IN connexion with experiments under the direction of Dr. L. J. Harris1 on the ro1e of the suprarenal gland in vitamin C metabolism, we have investigated the silver nitrate staining capacity of glands taken from normal and scorbutic animals. It will be recalled that long before the identity of vitamin C with hexuronic acid was postulated2,3, Szent ...

Crystalline Structure of Hexuronic Acid

Nature, 1932
FROM a purified specimen of ‘hexuronic acid’ (identified by Szent-Gyorgyi with vitamin C) available in this laboratory I have been able to obtain sufficiently good crystals to carry out an X-ray examination by the single-crystal rotation method. The substance is monoclinic sphenoidal, with a = 17.71, b = 6.32, c = 6.38 A., and I² = 102½°, while the ...

Crystallized Vitamin C and Hexuronic Acid

Science, 1937
After Szent-Gyorgyi won the Nobel prize, Cox addressed the controversy regarding the discovery of Vitamin C with this summary of research and publication by Szent-Gyorgyi, C. G. King, and others.

On the formation of 2,3-dihydroxyacetophenone from pentoses or hexuronic acids

Carbohydrate Research, 1993
Abstract The structure of a previously isolated intermediate in the title reaction has been revised to 3-acetyl-2,3,4-trihydroxycyclohexanone by high-field 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The three hydroxyl groups are mutually cis -related.

Variations in the hexuronic acid composition of mammalian heparins and mammalian heparin fractions

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1973
Abstract When heparins were methanolyzed under conditions described in the present paper, derivatieves of hexuronic acid monomes were obtained in good yields as determined quantitatively by ga-liquid chromatography. The amount of hexuronic acids released from N-acetylated, N-desulfated beef lung heparin accounted for 75% of the calculated amount of ...
