Status epilepticus: Updates on mechanisms and treatments

Abstract Status epilepticus (SE) consists of prolonged, self‐sustaining seizures and is a common neurological emergency that causes respiratory compromise and neuronal injury. Without prompt treatment, the seizures can become resistant to benzodiazepines, leading to the progressive evolution of established, refractory, and super‐refractory SE.

In a study of physical and nutritional characteristics of cases of coronary heart disease, it was found that a large number of patients had low intake of fat, about 50 gm per day, and their carbohydrate intake was high. Successful diabetes management demands a high degree of adherence. Adherence to medical prescriptions, particularly special diets, is notoriously poor. A study of 40 individuals with IDDM and NIDDM who were followed an average of 23 months found good or excellent dietary adherence in 70 % of subjects; only 5 % demon strated poor adherence.
