Injury burden due to high temperature based on global burden of disease data from 1990 to 2021
Background Extreme heat is an emerging injury risk. We aimed to quantify the global burden of injuries attributable to high temperature from 1990 to 2021 using age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life-year ...

Ukraine set to act on high suicide burden [PDF]
Having survived multiple catastrophes in the 20th century, newly independent Ukraine now has some of the highest injury death rates in Europe. The nation’s most common type of injury death is suicide, and its rate is one of Europe’s and the world’s highest. Alcohol abuse occurs in 20% of men, and major depression in 20% of women. Suicide is the leading

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Labour Tax Reform, The Good Jobs and the Bad Jobs. [PDF]
We analyse recent proposals to shift the tax burden away from low-paid labour, assuming a dual labour market where the 'good' high-paying jobs are rationed. A shift in the tax burden from low-paid to high-paid workers has an ambiguous effect on the level

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

High Burden of Staphylococcal Disease in Indigenous Communities [PDF]
Numerous studies in the past 2 decades have recorded an apparently high rate of Staphylococcus aureus infection in socalled indigenous populations in particular, a high rate of infection caused by methicillin-resistant strains of S. aureus (MRSA) [1], Such problems have been documented among Native Americans [2], Pacific Islanders in Hawaii [3 ...

The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
