Hippocampal Sclerosis Dementia with Tauopathy

open access: yesBrain Pathology, 2003
In some elderly individuals with dementia, hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is the only remarkable autopsy finding. The cause of HS in this setting is puzzling, since known causes of HS such as seizures or global hypoxic‐ischemic episodes are rarely present. We here describe a series of HS cases that have a widespread neuronal and/or glial tauopathy.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis: Seizure, neuropsychological, and quality of life outcomes of 100 patients treated with trans‐anterior T1 selective amygdalohippocampectomy

open access: yesEpileptic Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective For mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE with HS), laser interstitial thermal therapy has recently been increasingly used. At our institute, however, selective amygdalohippocampectomy by a trans‐anterior T1 subpial approach (trans‐anterior T1 SAH) has been used for MTLE with HS. Here, we examined the seizure,

Early tissue damage and microstructural reorganization predict disease severity in experimental epilepsy

open access: yeseLife, 2017
Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) is the most common focal epilepsy in adults and is often refractory to medication. So far, resection of the epileptogenic focus represents the only curative therapy.

The usefulness of intraoperative electrocorticography (iECoG) in pediatric temporal lobe epilepsy surgery

open access: yesEpileptic Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of intraoperative electrocorticography (iECoG) in providing a more accurate surgical strategy, thereby yielding seizure freedom following resective surgery in children with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Hippocampal Abnormalities with Cortical Malformations in Epilepsy Patients

open access: yesPediatric Neurology Briefs, 2010
The occurrence of various types and MRI appearance of hippocampal abnormalities in 220 patients with malformations of cortical development (MCD) were studied in various centers and large public hospital outpatient clinics in Germany and Austria.

Ictal semiology in lateral temporal epilepsy: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesEpileptic Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective We performed a systematic review of the ictal semiology of the lateral temporal lobe in focal epilepsy aiming to summarize the state‐of‐the‐art anatomo‐clinical correlations in the field and help guide interpretation of ictal semiology within the framework of pre‐surgical evaluation.

Global Hippocampal Volume Reductions and Local CA1 Shape Deformations in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2018
There is increasing evidence for hippocampal involvement in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Recent neuroimaging studies have been focused on disease-related hippocampal volume alterations while changes in hippocampal shape have been investigated ...

Ictal semiology in precuneus seizures: A systematic review

open access: yesEpileptic Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective To evaluate the ictal semiology in seizures originating in the precuneus and to help guide seizure interpretation within the framework of presurgical evaluation. Methods This systematic review followed a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) and a Quality Assessment tool for Diagnostic Accuracy ...

Hippocampal Sclerosis: Causes and Prevention [PDF]

open access: yesSeminars in Neurology, 2015
Hippocampal sclerosis is the commonest cause of drug-resistant epilepsy in adults, and is associated with alterations to structures and networks beyond the hippocampus. In addition to being a cause of epilepsy, the hippocampus is vulnerable to damage from seizure activity.

Congenital Porencephaly and Hippocampal Sclerosis

open access: yesPediatric Neurology Briefs, 1997
MRI volumetric findings were correlated with seizure patterns and EEGs in 14 patients with intractable seizures, porencephaly and hippocampal sclerosis (HS) in a study at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, AL.
