Smoke and Mirrors: Internalizing the Magic Lantern Show in \u3cem\u3eVillette\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
With considerable historical background in mind, I would like to examine a number of the stock gothic tropes, including the mysterious nun, the paintings of women, the theater scene, and the fête in Villette as examples of not simply one of last gasps of

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Document Image Binarization with Fully Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yes, 2017
Binarization of degraded historical manuscript images is an important pre-processing step for many document processing tasks. We formulate binarization as a pixel classification learning task and apply a novel Fully Convolutional Network (FCN ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Christian truth and political power in Evelyn Waugh’s Helena [PDF]

open access: yesИзвестия Саратовского университета. Новая серия: Серия Филология, Журналистика
The novel Helena (1950) is analyzed as Evelyn Waugh’s profound statement on his most significant problems: the possibility to resolve the crises of the 20th-century consciousness through Christianity and on the nature of power.

“Coastal” versus “inland” shorebird species: interlinked fundamental dichotomies between their life- and demographic histories? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In this contribution I present an extended but testable hypothesis (or “evolutionary scenario”) to explain how and why many life-history features of latitudinal migrant shorebirds, basically characterised by the correlation between habitat choice in the ...

Automatic Compositor Attribution in the First Folio of Shakespeare

open access: yes, 2017
Compositor attribution, the clustering of pages in a historical printed document by the individual who set the type, is a bibliographic task that relies on analysis of orthographic variation and inspection of visual details of the printed page.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
