Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2001 Recent progress in black hole research is illustrated by three examples. We discuss the observational challenges that were met to show that a supermassive black hole exists at the center of our galaxy. Stellar-size black holes have been studied in x-ray binaries and microquasars.

In addition to the usual small fluctuations, we find the spectrum contains a branch of solitonic excitations of finite energy. We determine the dispersion relation for these excitations. Physical Review D, 2011 The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that in models with large extra dimensions under special conditions one can extract information from the interior of 4D black holes.
