Competition of Parental Genomes in Plant Hybrids

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
Interspecific hybridization represents one of the main mechanisms of plant speciation. Merging of two genomes from different subspecies, species, or even genera is frequently accompanied by whole-genome duplication (WGD).

Synaptonemal complex components persist at centromeres and are required for homologous centromere pairing in mouse spermatocytes. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2012
Recent studies in simple model organisms have shown that centromere pairing is important for ensuring high-fidelity meiotic chromosome segregation. However, this process and the mechanisms regulating it in higher eukaryotes are unknown.

Meiotic Nuclear Oscillations Are Necessary to Avoid Excessive Chromosome Associations

open access: yesCell Reports, 2016
Pairing of homologous chromosomes is a crucial step in meiosis, which in fission yeast depends on nuclear oscillations. However, how nuclear oscillations help pairing is unknown.

Identification of genes that promote or antagonize somatic homolog pairing using a high-throughput FISH-based screen.

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2012
The pairing of homologous chromosomes is a fundamental feature of the meiotic cell. In addition, a number of species exhibit homolog pairing in nonmeiotic, somatic cells as well, with evidence for its impact on both gene regulation and double-strand ...

Exploiting Homology Information in Nontemplate Based Prediction of Protein Structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this paper we describe a novel strategy for exploring the conformational space of proteins and show that this leads to better models for proteins the structure of which is not amenable to template based methods. Our strategy is based on the assumption

Homologous pairing in stretched supercoiled DNA

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1998
By using elastic measurements on single DNA molecules, we show that stretching a negatively supercoiled DNA activates homologous pairing in physiological conditions. These experiments indicate that a stretched unwound DNA locally denatures to alleviate the force-driven increase in torsional stress.

Crystal structure of Hop2-Mnd1 and mechanistic insights into its role in meiotic recombination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In meiotic DNA recombination, the Hop2-Mnd1 complex promotes Dmc1-mediated single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) invasion into homologous chromosomes to form a synaptic complex by a yet-unclear mechanism.

Analysis of chromosome positions in the interphase nucleus of Chinese hamster cells by laser-UV-microirradiation experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
Unsynchronized cells of an essentially diploid strain of female Chinese hamster cells derived from lung tissue (CHL) were laser-UV-microirradiated (=257 nm) in the nucleus either at its central part or at its periphery.

Phenol-treatment and a homologous pairing-assay

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 1992
Homologous pairing is a key step in homologous genetic recombination. In the early stage of trials for the identification of homologous pairing-promoting proteins from a fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, we treated DNA products with phenol in the presence of a salt for the removal of tightly bound proteins from DNA before the assay, but we ...

Agent-based modeling of nuclear chromosome ensembles identifies determinants of homolog pairing during meiosis.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology
During meiosis, pairing of homologous chromosomes (homologs) ensures the formation of haploid gametes from diploid precursor cells, a prerequisite for sexual reproduction.
