Plasma Homovanillic Acid and Prolactin in Huntington’s Disease

Neurochemical Research, 2008
Dopaminergic activity is expected to be altered in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and be related to factors like duration and severity of illness or patients' specific symptomatology like dementia, depression, or psychotic features. We assessed plasma homovanillic acid (pHVA) and plasma prolactin (pPRL), two correlates of dopaminergic activity,

CEREBROSPINAL FLUID HOMOVANILLIC ACID AND ISO‐HOMOVANILLIC ACID: A GAS–LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHOD

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1974
Abstract— The hexafluoroisopropyl esters of trifluoroacetylated homovanillic acid (HVA) and 3‐hydroxy‐4‐methoxyphenylacetic acid (iso‐HVA) were the derivatives chosen for assay of these phenolic acids in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from 65 control subjects. The mean value obtained in these specimens was 40.0 ± 23.5 ng/ml.

Plasma homovanillic acid concentrations in catatonia

Biological Psychiatry, 1996
We investigated the dopamine metabolite plasma homovanillic acid (plasma HVA) levels in 37 catatonic patients on the day of admission before initial medication as well as in 17 healthy controls. In a prospective study catatonic syndrome was diagnosed according to criteria of Lohr and Wiesniwski (1987) and Rosebush et al (1990) whereas comorbid ...

Regional homovanillic acid production in humans

Life Sciences, 1993
Peripheral plasma levels of homovanillic acid (HVA), the deaminated and o-methylated metabolite of dopamine, are often used as an indicator of central nervous system dopaminergic activity. Using percutaneously placed catheters, we studied the regional inputs into the plasma HVA pool in 60 healthy volunteers.

Estimation of homovanillic acid in urine

Analytical Biochemistry, 1964
Abstract 1. 1. A method is described for measuring homovanillic acid, the major metabolite of dopamine, in human urine. Its assay provides a convenient index of dopamine production in the body. 2. 2. The estimation involves the isolation of homovanillic acid from urine by extraction and silica gel chromatography, followed by demethylation to ...

Homovanillic acid transport by the spinal cord

Neurology, 1976
Spinal subarachnoid perfusions of rhesus monkeys were performed to study spinal transport of homovanillic acid in control and probenecid-treated animals. Homovanillic acid enters capillaries within spinal tissue throughout the spinal cord. The mean capillary exchange half-time for homovanillic acid was 19.2+/-2.8 minutes; probenecid did not affect this

A Highly Selective Implantable Electrochemical Fiber Sensor for Real-Time Monitoring of Blood Homovanillic Acid.

ACS Nano
Homovanillic acid (HVA) is a major dopamine metabolite, and blood HVA is considered as central nervous system (CNS) dopamine biomarker, which reflects the progression of dopamine-associated CNS diseases and the behavioral response to therapeutic drugs ...

Interchangeability between 24‐hour collection and single spot urines for vanillylmandelic and homovanillic acid levels in the diagnosis of neuroblastoma

Pediatric Blood & Cancer, 2013
The determination of the two urinary catecholamine metabolites homovanillic acid (HVA) and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) is of crucial importance for the diagnosis and follow‐up of neuroblastoma (NB).

Determination of homovanillic acid turnover in man

Life Sciences, 1974
Abstract Homovanillic acid (HVA) labelled with five deuterium (d) atoms was used to determine the total body turnover of HVA, the size of the peripheral body pool of HVA and HVA elimination characteristics in five healthy men. After i.v. injection of 5.5 μmoles (1 mg) of HVA-d 5 the levels of HVA-d 5 and endogenous HVA (HVA-d o ) in plasma and ...

URINARY HOMOVANILLIC ACID LEVELS OF AUTISTIC CHILDREN

Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 1988
SUMMARYAnomalies in dopamine metabolism were investigated by assaying total homovanillic acid, and its free and conjugated fractions, in the urine of 34 autistic, 34 normal and 34 mentally retarded children. An increase in total homovanillic acid in autistic and retarded children is apparently due to an increase of free homovanillic acid in the ...
