Plasma homovanillic acid in schizotypal personality disorder
American Journal of Psychiatry, 1991Schizotypal patients were found to have a significantly higher mean plasma HVA concentration than normal comparison subjects. Furthermore, plasma HVA concentration positively correlated with "psychotic-like" schizotypal symptoms. These results implicate dopaminergic mechanisms modulating the psychotic-like symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder.

CSF homovanillic acid in schizotypal personality disorder
American Journal of Psychiatry, 1993CSF concentrations of homovanillic acid (HVA) were measured in 10 patients with schizotypal personality disorder and 14 patients with other personality disorders. The patients with schizotypal personality disorder had higher CSF HVA concentrations than the patients with other personality disorders.

Disposition of homovanillic acid in the primate
Metabolic Brain Disease, 1987Prior studies have shown that homovanillic acid is the principal metabolite of dopamine in the primate central nervous system (CNS). In studies of primates given deuterated homovanillic acid systemically, however, only 50% of the administered amounts have been recovered in the urine over the next 4-48 hr.

Homovanillic Acid and Vanilmandelic Acid in Diagnosis of Neuroblastoma
JAMA, 1963Neuroblastoma, a malignant tumor of childhood, originates from precursor cells of sympathetic nerve tissue or adrenal medulla. These cells produce excessive quantities of dopa, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These are converted to two major terminal urinary metabolites, homovanillic acid (HVA) and vanilmandelic acid (VMA).

Iso-homovanillic acid determination in human urine
Clinica Chimica Acta, 1971Abstract A method for the assay of urinary iso-homovanillic acid (iso-HVA) is described. Iso-HVA is extracted from urine at pH 2 by ethyl acetate. A bidimensional paper chromatography of the extract is followed by spraying with Gibbs' reagent, elution in precise conditions and colorimetric estimation of the eluate.

Plasma homovanillic acid in psychotic depression
Depression, 1993AbstractElevated levels of plasma homovanillic acid (HVA) are associated with increased psychopathology after neuroleptic withdrawal in schizophrenia, and may be predictive of treatment response in psychotic patients. There are limited extant data on plasma HVA in psychotic and non‐psychotic major depression.

Cerebrospinal fluid homovanillic acid in Huntington's chorea
Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 1971Abstract The cerebrospinal fluid level of homovanillic acid was normal in 6 individuals with untreated Huntington's chorea. This is felt to be a reflection of normal dopamine metabolism in these individuals. Since the action of dopamine as a neurotransmitter has been associated with the production of chorea, the finding of normal cerebrospinal fluid ...

Schizophrenia: Gender, family risk, and plasma homovanillic acid
American Journal of Medical Genetics, 1995AbstractPlasma homovanillic acid concentration was assessed in 60 young schizophrenic patients, with and without first‐degree relatives with schizophrenia, before treatment, and 3 days after starting haloperidol treatment. The baseline concentration of homovanillic acid in plasma was no different in the two groups before treatment; it was, however ...

Cerebrospinal fluid homovanillic acid patterns during neuroleptic treatment
Psychiatry Research, 1981Twenty-four psychotic patients were studied at two points during continuous neuroleptic treatment. Thirteen patients showed a tolerance pattern with respect to cerebrospinal fluid homovanillic acid following probenecid while 11 showed a nontolerance pattern. Patients who developed tolerance had significantly fewer symptoms and Parkinsonian side effects
