Plasma homovanillic acid in adolescents with bulimia nervosa
Psychiatry Research, 2009Dopaminergic abnormalities in bulimia nervosa have been reported in some studies, but results are not consistent across studies. In the present study, clinical characteristics, plasma level of homovanillic acid (pHVA) and two scales - the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) - were assessed in 36 adolescent bulimia ...

Plasma homovanillic acid levels and subtyping of schizophrenia
Psychiatry Research, 1988Plasma levels of homovanillic acid (HVA), a major metabolite of dopamine, were measured in a group of 24 schizophrenic inpatients before and during 6 weeks of haloperidol (HAL) treatment. Steady-state plasma HAL levels were measured in parallel with plasma HVA.

An effect of diet on homovanillic acid excretion

Striatal dopamine and homovanillic acid in Huntington's Disease
Journal of Neural Transmission, 1986Using tissue taken post mortem from patients with neuropathologically confirmed Huntington's disease and a series of appropriate control cases, GABA, dopamine and homovanillic acid were measured in the caudate nucleus and the putamen. The previously reported loss of GABA in Huntington's disease was confirmed, while no change in dopamine concentrations ...

Effect of gonadectomy on brain homovanillic acid levels
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 1984The effect produced by gonadectomy on homovanillic acid (HVA) levels in three regions of male and female rat brain during the postnatal period has been studied. In all areas, the HVA levels rise in gonadectomized rats when they are compared with the controls in the first period, but later these levels decrease with respect to the control rats.

Work Exposure to Urban Pollutants and Urinary Homovanillic Acid
Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A, 2003The aim of this study was to evaluate whether traffic policemen exposed to urban pollutants could be at risk of alterations on urinary homovanillic acid in 24h HVA(U) excretion levels, an end product of dopamine catabolism, compared with a control group.

Increase of brain homovanillic acid level induced by metoclopramide
Neuropharmacology, 1975Abstract Metoelopramide (1 to 10 mg/kg) increased brain homovanillic acid but not 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels and caused no change in dopamine or norepinephrine concentrations. The metoclopramide-induced elevation of homovanillic acid levels is likely to be the result of an accelerated dopamine turnover.

Cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and homovanillic acid in psychiatric patients
International Journal of Neuropharmacology, 1969Abstract Levels of 5HIAA and HVA have been measured in the lumbar CSF of psychiatric patients. Pre-treatment values for CSF 5HIAA were lower in a combined group of psychiatric patients age matched with neurologic patients as controls. CSF 5HIAA was lower than in age matched neurologic controls in each psychiatric diagnostic sub-group; however, these ...

Central neurotropic activity of homovanillic acid.
Acta physiologica Polonica, 1982In experiments performed on male Wistar rats in was shown that i.v.c. administered homovanillic acid (HVA) in a dose of 50 micrograms exerted an inhibitory effect on the locomotor activity. In this dose HVA potentiated also the cataleptogenic effect of haloperidol and amphetamine-induced locomotor hyperactivity.
