Increased health service use for asthma, but decreased for COPD: Northumbrian hospital episodes, 2013–2014 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The burden of respiratory disease has persisted over the years, for both men and women. The aim of the present study was to investigate the hospital episode rates in respiratory disease and to understand whether and how the use of the health service for ...

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Screening strategies in surveillance and control of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
With reports of hospital-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) continuing to increase and therapeutic options decrease, infection control methods are of increasing importance.

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

Role of cystatin C and beta-2microglobulin in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetic nephropathy

open access: yesJournal of Biological Research
Nephropathy is one of the most frequent icrovascular complications of diabetes. It generates the most reserved prognosis since it increases the risk of end-stage renal failure.

Interrogating the immune landscape of microsatellite stable RAS‐mutated colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
COLOSSUS project RAS‐mutated MSS colon cancer study explored transcriptomics and immune cell density by immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunoscore (IS), ISIC/TuLIS scores, mutation counts, and detected different prevalences but similar microenvironment composition across immune markers with clinical relevance for future immunotherapy combination ...

Mortality of hospital or community-acquired Legionnaires’ disease (LD): a prospective study [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Proceedings, 2011
The clinical aspects and outcome of hospital (HA) and community-acquired (CA) cases of LD might be different. We explored these topics in 267 patients with LD hospitalized in France.

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Somatic mutational landscape in von Hippel–Lindau familial hemangioblastoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The causes of central nervous system (CNS) hemangioblastoma in Von Hippel–Lindau (vHL) disease are unclear. We used Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) on familial hemangioblastoma to investigate events that underlie tumor development. Our findings suggest that VHL loss creates a permissive environment for tumor formation, while additional alterations ...

Approach to Hospital-Acquired and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Meningitis [PDF]

open access: yesMediterranean Journal of Infection, Microbes and Antimicrobials, 2013
Among the hospital infections, hospital-acquired central nervous system infections are quite important due to the high mortality. The pathogens that cause hospital-acquired meningitis differ according to the immune system and underlying diseases.
