Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Characterization of a Toxoplasma effector uncovers an alternative GSK3/β-catenin-regulatory pathway of inflammation

open access: yeseLife, 2018
The intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii, hijacks evolutionarily conserved host processes by delivering effector proteins into the host cell that shift gene expression in a timely fashion.

Engineering Porous Hollow Metal‐Poly(Heptazine Imide) Spheres: An Optimized Synthetic Strategy for Controlling Surface, Morphology, and Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Hollow poly(heptazine imide) spheres are prepared through a novel approach that integrates hard templating with ionothermal synthesis. This method enables precise control over surface area, pore volume, hydrophilicity, light absorption, band position, and metal composition. These tunable properties facilitate the customized design of semiconductors for

Extracellular Vesicles Mediate Epimastigogenesis in Trypanosoma cruzi: Strain-Specific Dynamics and Temperature-Dependent Differentiation

open access: yesLife
Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, undergoes epimastigogenesis—a critical differentiation step in which trypomastigotes transform into epimastigotes. While this process is essential for the parasite’s survival in its insect vector,

Innate Immune B Cell Activation by Leishmania donovani Exacerbates Disease and Mediates Hypergammaglobulinemia

open access: yesCell Reports, 2016
Participation of B cells in the immune response by various antibody-independent mechanisms has recently been uncovered. B cells producing cytokines have been described for several infections and appear to regulate the adaptive immune response.

Z‐Scheme Water Splitting Systems Based on Solid‐State Electron Conductors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review examines the latest advances in Z‐scheme overall water splitting (OWS) systems for solar hydrogen production. These systems consist of suspended or immobilized hydrogen evolution photocatalysts (HEPs) and oxygen evolution photocatalysts (OEPs).

Trends on Microalgae-Fungi Consortia Research: An Alternative for Biofuel Production?

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
The utilization of microalgae and fungi on an industrial scale is a challenge for researchers. Based on the question “how fungi have contributed to microalgae research?,” we verified the scientific trends on microalgae-fungi consortia focused on biofuels

Epidemiology of parasitic protozoan infections in Soay sheep (Ovis aries L.) on St Kilda [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The feral Soay sheep (Ovis aries L.) population on Hirta, St Kilda, is host to a diverse component parasite community, but previous parasitological studies of the population have only focussed on the metazoan species.

Synergistic Osteogenesis After Co‐Administration of cmRNAs Encoding BMP‐2 and BMP‐7 Utilizing a Transcript‐Activated Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that the dual delivery of BMP‐2/‐7 coding cmRNAs for bone healing is demonstrated as feasible, safe, and highly osteogenic. Compared to single BMP‐2 or BMP‐7 cmRNAs, the combination enhances the production of both mineral and organic components of the extracellular matrix when delivered using a collagen‐HA scaffold, supporting ...

Avian malaria co-infections confound infectivity and vector competence assays of Plasmodium homopolare. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Currently, there are very few studies of avian malaria that investigate relationships among the host-vector-parasite triad concomitantly. In the current study, we experimentally measured the vector competence of several Culex mosquitoes for a newly ...
