The estimation of host-resistance in cancer

Medical Hypotheses, 1985
From the third year after its clinical diagnosis and onward the cancer hazard rate continuously declines. This phenomenon is common to all cancers irrespective of stage, and far less pronounced in other chronic diseases. It is so typical of cancer as to be regarded as a "law of the improving chances of the cancer patient".

A host–microparasite model with a resistant host

Ecological Complexity, 2005
Abstract The theory of heterozygote advantage is often used to explain the genetic variation found in natural populations. If a large population randomly mates and the various genotypes have the same growth and death rates, the evolution of the genotypes follows Hardy–Weinberg proportions and polymorphism results.

The role of complement in host resistance to bacteria

Springer Seminars in Immunopathology, 1983
Some of the earliest observations that led to our current understanding of the function of the complement system were made just before the turn of the century when it was noted that fresh blood had the power to kill certain types of bacteria [3, 17]. Analysis of the bactericidal activity of blood led to the recognition of factors called into play by ...

Host Resistance to Carcinoma of the Breast

Southern Medical Journal, 1980
The recent demonstration that tumor cell circulation occurs early in the development of a growing neoplasm allows us to hypothesize that the growth of a primary lesion provides the patient with sufficient exposure to disseminating tumor cells to define the lower limit of her own threshold of host resistance.

Viral Host Resistance Studies

2009
A foremost objective of preclinical immunotoxicity testing is to address whether or not a drug or environmental toxicant causes adverse effects on net immune health, expressly the host's ability to mount an appropriate immune response to clear infectious organisms.

TNF in Host Resistance to Tuberculosis Infection

2010
TNF is essential to control Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and cannot be replaced by other proinflammatory cytokines. Overproduction of TNF may cause immunopathology, while defective TNF production results in uncontrolled infection. The critical role of TNF in the control of tuberculosis has been illustrated recently by primary and reactivation ...
